Leave Coimbatore early and drive via Trichy to Thanjavur. After lunch, visit the Thanjavur Palace, then the Brihadeeswarar Temple in the late afternoon, when the granite turns gold and the courtyard is cooler. Overnight in Thanjavur.

  2. Day 2: Gangaikonda Cholapuram, Darasuram and Kumbakonam temples

Drive north to Gangaikonda Cholapuram in the morning. Come back south to Darasuram, then check in at Kumbakonam and visit two or three town temples in the evening. Overnight in Kumbakonam.

  3. Day 3: Swamimalai, bronze-craft village and return

Visit the Swamimalai Murugan temple and a bronze-casting workshop in the village, then drive back to Coimbatore.

How far / how to reach

Thanjavur is about 300 km from Coimbatore via Karur and Trichy, around 5.5 to 6.5 hours with stops. Gangaikonda Cholapuram is about 35 km north of Kumbakonam, and the Day 3 drive home is about 320 km. See more on our Thanjavur page and Kumbakonam page.

Places you will see

The Brihadeeswarar Temple, the Big Temple, was built by Rajaraja Chola I. About 1 km away is the Thanjavur Palace, which the Thanjavur district's palace page says was built partly by the Nayaks and partly by the Marathas, with long corridors, towers and fresco ceilings.

The Ariyalur district page on Gangaikonda Cholapuram explains that Rajendra Chola I built the city and its Siva temple between 1023 and 1036 after his campaign to the Ganges, and that it served as the Chola capital for about 256 years. The temple is now under the ASI and HR&CE.

For Darasuram temple history, the district's Darasuram page dates the Airavateswarar temple to the 12th century and notes its miniature sculptures on the front columns. Darasuram is also a silk-weaving town.

Swamimalai is one of Murugan's six abodes, and the district's Swamimalai page notes that its bronze idols are much sought after. The whole set is covered on our six Murugan abodes trip.

Best time to go

November to February is the most comfortable. April to June is very hot on bare temple stone at midday, so we keep temple visits for mornings and late afternoons. The Mahamaham festival in Kumbakonam brings very large crowds once every 12 years.

Frequently asked questions

Who was the Darasuram temple built by?

The Thanjavur district credits it to Rajaraja Chola II, in the 12th century. Together with the Big Temple and Gangaikonda Cholapuram, it is one of the three Chola temples UNESCO lists as World Heritage.

What are the Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple timings?

Temple timings change on festival days, so we check them for your date. We plan it for Day 2 morning, which avoids the midday heat on the open courtyard.

Which Kumbakonam temples do we visit on Day 2?

Tell us which Kumbakonam temples you want and we plan the evening around them. Common picks are the Adi Kumbeswarar, Sarangapani and Ramaswamy temples in town; evening opening hours vary, so we check them on the day. We can also add the Thirunageswaram temple, known as the Rahu shrine, about 7 km out.

What is the main temple in Kumbakonam?

Most locals would say Adi Kumbeswarar, linked to the Mahamaham festival. What most visitors remember about Kumbakonam is how many temples sit within a few streets of each other.

How is this different from a Navagraha temple tour?

Many cover the nine Navagraha temples. This one is about Chola architecture and crafts. For the planet temples, see our Navagraha temples trip.

Who is this package not for?

People who want beaches or a relaxed pace. For Thanjavur with the coast, the Thanjavur, Pondicherry and Mahabalipuram 5-day trip fits better. For Velankanni and Nagore instead, see our Velankanni and Nagore 3-day trip. For a longer stay in the temple town, try Kumbakonam with Chettinad in 5 days.

What are the payment and cancellation terms?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.
