Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Thanjavur

    Morning pickup in Coimbatore and a long drive east across Tamil Nadu. You reach Thanjavur in the afternoon and visit Sri Brihadeeswarar Temple in the evening light. Night in Thanjavur.

  2. Day 2: Thanjavur to Pondicherry

    Drive to Pondicherry. Evening walk on Promenade Beach. Night in Pondicherry.

  3. Day 3: Pondicherry and Auroville

    Morning in the French Quarter, walking the colonial streets near the seafront. Afternoon at Auroville, north of the town, for the visitors centre and the Matrimandir viewing point. Second night in Pondicherry.

  4. Day 4: Pondicherry to Mahabalipuram

    Drive up the East Coast Road to Mahabalipuram and see the Shore Temple and the rock-cut monuments around it. Night in Mahabalipuram.

  5. Day 5: Mahabalipuram to Coimbatore

    A long drive back to Coimbatore, around 8 to 9 hours with stops, with drop-off at your pickup point. We leave after breakfast and you reach Coimbatore in the evening.

How to reach / distance

This trip starts and ends in Coimbatore. Thanjavur is about 300 km from Coimbatore, roughly 6 hours by road. Thanjavur to Pondicherry is about 195 km, around 4 to 5 hours with stops, and Pondicherry to Mahabalipuram is about 95 km along the East Coast Road, around 2 to 3 hours. The drive from Mahabalipuram back to Coimbatore is about 475 km, around 8 to 9 hours with stops. Pondicherry is about 135 km from Chennai airport, according to the Puducherry government's travel page.

Places you will see

Thanjavur's Big Temple is a 212 ft (64.8 m) Chola temple, and the Thanjavur district page on the Big Temple says it holds one of the largest Shiva lingas in the country. Most visitors come for the Thanjavur Big Temple Shiva lingam and the single-stone Nandi facing it.

Pondicherry was the main French settlement in India, according to the Government of Puducherry.

At Auroville, the visitor information on auroville.org explains that the Matrimandir viewing point is open to day visitors, while the inner chamber needs an advance booking and closes on Tuesdays and Sundays. We do not include inner chamber visits; book them yourself on the Matrimandir booking page if you want one.

Mahabalipuram was a Pallava port. The Chengalpattu district page on Mamallapuram describes the Shore Temple and nine rock-cut cave temples, and puts Chennai airport 52 km away.

Best time to go

December to February is the most comfortable for temple and street walks. April to June is hot, and the northeast monsoon brings heavy rain in October and November.

₹23,000 to ₹28,000 per person. The per-person rate falls as the group grows because the vehicle cost is shared. A sedan suits a couple, an Innova or Innova Crysta suits a family of up to 7, and a Tempo Traveller or Force Urbania suits larger groups. The vehicle is named in your quote.

Is this trip suitable for families?

Yes. Among our Pondicherry tour packages for family groups, this one splits the drives across 5 days and gives Pondicherry two nights. Tell us the ages of children and grandparents and we pick the vehicle and rooms to suit.

Where does the trip start and end?

All our trips start and end in Coimbatore. The last day is a long drive from Mahabalipuram, around 8 to 9 hours with stops. If that is too much, an extra night on the way can be added on request.

Can we change the plan?

Yes. You can add a night in Pondicherry, skip Auroville or add Kumbakonam temples between Thanjavur and the coast. Tell us before booking and we adjust the plan and price.

Is the Big Temple open all day?

Temple timings change, and many temples close for a few hours at midday, so we check them for your date and plan Day 1 to reach it in the late afternoon, when the stone floors are cooler.

Who should pick a different package?

If you only want the French town and the beach, our 3 day Pondicherry trip costs less. For more Chola temples, take the Thanjavur and Kumbakonam heritage tour. If the Shore Temple is all you want, try our Chennai to Mahabalipuram weekend.

What about payment and cancellation?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.
