Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Palani

    A short first day. Afternoon darshan at the Palani hill temple and night in Palani.

  2. Day 2: Thiruparankundram and Pazhamudircholai, Madurai halt

    Drive to Madurai. Darshan at Thiruparankundram, then up the Solaimalai hill to Pazhamudircholai. Night in Madurai.

  3. Day 3: Tiruchendur

    Drive south to the coast for darshan at Tiruchendur. Night in Tiruchendur.

  4. Day 4: Swamimalai via Thanjavur or Kumbakonam

    A long drive north to the delta. Darshan at Swamimalai, with a stop at Thanjavur on the way if time allows. Night in Kumbakonam.

  5. Day 5: Tiruttani

    Drive north to Tiruttani for darshan at the hill temple. Night in Tiruttani.

  6. Day 6: Return to Coimbatore

    The longest drive of the trip, about 460 km and around 7.5 to 8.5 hours with stops, back across Tamil Nadu to your pickup point in Coimbatore. If you would rather not do it in one go, ask us to add a night halt and we price it in your quote.

Distances on this route

  • Coimbatore to Palani: about 100 km, per the Dindigul district.
  • The Palani to Pazhamudircholai distance runs via Madurai, then 21 km north-east of the city to the hill.
  • Madurai to Tiruchendur, Tiruchendur to Kumbakonam and Kumbakonam to Tiruttani are each long drive days.

Best time to go

October to March is cooler for climbing hill temples. Thai Poosam (January or February) and Skanda Sashti (October or November) bring very large crowds; plan a day's buffer if your dates fall on them. The exact dates change each year.

The six temples

Palani's Arulmigu Dhandayuthapani Swamy Temple is about 100 km south-east of Coimbatore, at the foot of the Palani hills, says the Dindigul district page. The hilltop shrine is reached by steps or by the hill's own lifts. Lift timings and fares change, so check them on the day.

Thiruparankundram, 8 km south of Madurai, is where Murugan's marriage to Devayanai is celebrated, and its cave shrines date from the 8th century, per the Madurai district page. Pazhamudircholai sits on top of the hill above Azhagar Kovil, about 21 km north-east of Madurai, says the district's Azhagar Kovil page.

Tiruchendur is the one abode on the seashore, facing the Gulf of Mannar. The temple is run by the state's Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department.

Swamimalai, in Thanjavur district, is also known for its bronze idol makers, per the Thanjavur district page. Tiruttani's temple crowns a rock about 700 feet above sea level, 13 km from Arakkonam and 84 km from Chennai, says the Tiruvallur district page.

Frequently asked questions

Can we visit only Tiruchendur?

Yes. If you only want Tiruchendur and back, ask us for a 2 or 3-day quote. This package suits devotees who want all six abodes.

Can we add a side trip near Tiruttani?

Kanchipuram lies south of Tiruttani, according to the Tiruvallur district. A side trip to Kanchipuram fits on Day 6 only if you add a night.

Can older family members manage this trip?

The drives are long and Palani, Pazhamudircholai and Tiruttani are hill temples. We can add rest nights and use lifts or vehicle access where they exist.

Is the order fixed?

No. We can reverse it or start with Tiruttani if that suits your dates.

How do payment and cancellation work?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.

Who is this package not for?
