Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Days 1 and 2: Coimbatore to Ooty, Ooty and Coonoor

    Up the Nilgiris on Day 1. Day 2 covers Ooty and Coonoor, including Coonoor viewpoints such as Dolphin's Nose. For a shorter hills break, see our Bandipur and Ooty 3-day trip. More trips are listed under places around Coonoor.

  2. Day 2: Days 3 and 4: Ooty to Kodaikanal, Kodaikanal sightseeing

    A long transfer day across the plains to the Palani Hills, then a full day in Kodaikanal.

  3. Day 3: Days 5 and 6: Kodaikanal to Madurai, Madurai temples

    Down to Madurai on Day 5. Day 6 is for the Meenakshi Amman Temple and the city's other temples. If temples are your focus, our 4-day Madurai and Rameswaram trip is shorter.

  4. Day 4: Madurai to Rameswaram

    Across the Pamban road bridge to the island and Ramanathaswamy Temple.

  5. Day 5: Days 8 and 9: Rameswaram to Kanyakumari, Kanyakumari sights

    South along the coast. Day 9 is for the Vivekananda Rock Memorial, the Thiruvalluvar statue and sunrise at the cape.

  6. Day 6: Kanyakumari to Thanjavur

    A long drive north to the Chola capital, with the Brihadeeswarar Temple in the evening light.

  7. Day 7: Thanjavur to Puducherry

    East to the coast, with Auroville and Promenade Beach.

  8. Day 8: Puducherry to Coimbatore via Trichy

    The return drive west through Tiruchirappalli to Coimbatore, about 390 km and around 7.5 to 8.5 hours with stops, ending with a drop at your pickup point.

How far and how to reach

Several days are long drives: Ooty to Kodaikanal (Day 3), Kanyakumari to Thanjavur (Day 10) and Puducherry to Coimbatore (Day 12). Vehicles from outside the district may need an e-pass for the Nilgiris and Kodaikanal; if that applies on your dates, we explain how it works in your quote.

Some travellers ask about starting in Pondicherry. All our trips start and end in Coimbatore, so the hills come first and the coast last.

Places you will see

The Brihadeeswarar Temple in Thanjavur was built under Rajaraja Chola I in the 11th century and is a UNESCO World Heritage site, as the Incredible India Thanjavur page notes. It is one of the UNESCO sites in Tamil Nadu you see on this trip; the other well-known ones, Mahabalipuram and the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, are not on the plan.

The Madurai district list of tourist places calls the Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple the centre the city grew around, which makes Madurai the heart of any temple trip in Tamil Nadu. Rameswaram is reached by the Pamban road bridge, described on the Ramanathapuram district page.

Dolphin's Nose is a viewpoint near Coonoor, and the Nilgiris district Ooty sights list covers the main Ooty stops. Puducherry's Auroville is an international township a short drive from the town; visitors usually see the Matrimandir from the viewing point. Visitor access rules change, so we check them for your date.

Best time to go

October to February is best for a trip this long: cooler on the plains and the coast, clear in the hills. The northeast monsoon brings rain to Puducherry and the coast around November and December. April and May are crowded in Ooty and Kodaikanal and hot in Madurai.

₹36,000 to ₹90,000 per person. Your figure depends on dates, the hotel and group size; the vehicle cost is shared, so a larger group pays less each. For 10 to 16 we send a Tempo Traveller or Urbania, and for bigger groups a 21 seater coach van or a 24 seater mini bus; Tamil Nadu temple roads suit a mini bus better than a full-size coach.

Frequently asked questions

Can we stop at Srirangam on the way back?

Yes. Day 12 passes Trichy. Srirangam is one of the 108 Divya Desam in Tamil Nadu, and an hour's stop fits if you start early.

Is 12 days too tiring?

It has rest-light days (Ooty, Kodaikanal, Madurai, Kanyakumari) between the long drives. If you want fewer transfers, drop Rameswaram and add a night in Kanyakumari.

Which vehicle will we get?

It depends on group size and is named in your quote.

Can we change the plan?

Yes. You can add Mahabalipuram or drop a stop. All our trips start and end in Coimbatore.

What are your payment and cancellation terms?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.

Who is this not for?
