How far is Guruvayur from Coimbatore?
Guruvayur is about 140 km from Coimbatore, a drive of around 3 hours. The route goes through Palakkad, then NH 544 towards Thrissur and the state roads to Guruvayur. The temple town is 26 km north-west of Thrissur, and the district page lists Kochi airport about 80 km away.
Guruvayur has its own railway station, east of the temple, on a line connected to the main Chennai to Mangalore line at Thrissur. From Coimbatore most families prefer a vehicle, because a temple day needs several short drives, to Punnathur Kotta and Mammiyoor.

The 2 day Guruvayur Thrissur plan is the one most families book. It has the Sri Krishna Temple, Mammiyoor, Punnathur Kotta, Vadakkunnathan and Paramekkavu. The 3 day Guruvayur Athirapally plan adds the falls. The 4 day Kerala temples plan adds Chottanikkara and Vaikom.
What to see in Guruvayur
The Guruvayur Sri Krishna Temple is the main reason to come. The deity is Guruvayurappan, Vishnu in the form of Krishna, and the temple is run by the Guruvayur Devaswom Board. Mammiyoor Shiva temple is about 200 m away, and Punnathur Kotta, the temple's elephant yard, is nearby.
- Sri Krishna Temple. Janmashtami, the Kumbham Utsavam and Guruvayur Ekadasi are the main festivals. Darshan timings and temple rules are set by the Devaswom Board and can change, so we confirm them for your date.
- Punnathur Kotta. The district page says it is about 2 km from the temple and was a local ruler's palace, now home to the temple's elephants. The yard holds around 35 elephants, according to Wikipedia. We visit while the elephants are out, then rest through the afternoon closing. For guruvayur elephant camp timings, the board sets them, so we check on the day.
- Mammiyoor. A Shiva temple about 200 m from the Krishna Temple, visited in the evening on the 2 day plan.
- Thrissur. Vadakkunnathan Temple and Paramekkavu Bhagavathi Temple stand close together in the town centre.
What the 2 day plan looks like
The 2 day plan leaves Coimbatore early and reaches Guruvayur by late morning. After hotel check-in you visit Punnathur Kotta first, then rest through the afternoon closing. Evening darshan at the Sri Krishna Temple and Mammiyoor follow, with the night in Guruvayur.
On day 2 you can attend the early-morning darshan before checkout, then drive to Thrissur for Vadakkunnathan and Paramekkavu and return to Coimbatore by evening.
Best time to visit Guruvayur
Guruvayur can be visited year round. March and April are the hottest months, and June and July are the wettest, as the south-west monsoon runs from June to September. October to February is the most comfortable window for a day of temple walking.
Festival days bring large crowds. If you want a quiet darshan, avoid Janmashtami and Guruvayur Ekadasi, or tell us the date so we plan the timing.
Combine Guruvayur with nearby places
Guruvayur sits 26 km from Thrissur and about 86 km from Kochi, so it combines easily with both. A Thrissur stop adds only a short drive, and Athirapally fits into a third day. Kerala temple circuits that include Chottanikkara and Vaikom go on to the Kochi side. See our pages for Thrissur, Athirapally, Cochin, Palakkad and Kerala.
