Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Rameswaram and Pamban Bridge

A long driving day. We leave Coimbatore early and cross the Pamban Bridge onto Rameswaram island by late afternoon. Overnight in Rameswaram.

  2. Day 2: Ramanathaswamy Temple, Agnitheertham, Dhanushkodi and Kalam Memorial

Start with a sea bath at Agnitheertham and darshan at the Ramanathaswamy Temple. Later, drive to Dhanushkodi at the tip of the island and stop at the Kalam Memorial on the way back. Second night in Rameswaram.

  3. Day 3: Rameswaram to Kanyakumari, sunset point

Drive down the coast to Kanyakumari, check in, and watch the sun set from the sunset point. Overnight in Kanyakumari.

  4. Day 4: Vivekananda Rock, Thiruvalluvar Statue, Suchindram and return

Take the first ferry to Vivekananda Rock and the Thiruvalluvar Statue, visit the Bhagavathi Amman temple, stop at Suchindram on the way out, then drive back to Coimbatore. You reach home late at night.

How far / how to reach

Coimbatore to Rameswaram is about 380 km, around 8 hours via Madurai. Rameswaram to Kanyakumari is about 300 km along the coast, and Kanyakumari back to Coimbatore is about 450 km. Days 1 and 4 are long; we plan breaks every two to three hours. More trips are on our Rameswaram page and Kanyakumari page.

Places you will see

The Ramanathapuram district's Pamban Bridge page gives the road bridge's length as 2.2 km. The Ramanathaswamy Temple page notes the 22 theerthams inside the temple, the third corridor of about 197 metres east to west, and its place among the twelve Jyotirlinga temples.

Dhanushkodi, 18 km from Rameswaram, was washed away by the 1964 cyclone; the Kothandaramaswamy temple there survived, according to the district's Dhanushkodi page. The Kalam Memorial stands where the former President was laid to rest in 2015.

In Kanyakumari, the district page on Vivekananda Mandapam and the Thiruvalluvar Statue lists visiting hours of 8 am to 4 pm, a ₹20 entry fee and a ferry fee of ₹34 per adult. The Kanyakumari statue of Thiruvalluvar is 133 feet tall including its 38-foot pedestal. The beach at Triveni Sangam, where three seas meet, is the town's main sunrise and sunset spot.

The district's temples page describes the Kanyakumari Bhagavathi Amman shrine at the edge of the sea, and the Thanumalayan temple at Suchindram, about 12 km away.

Best time to go

October to March is the easiest season for both towns. Strong winds can stop the Kanyakumari ferry and close the Dhanushkodi road on rough days, and we adjust the day if that happens. April to June is hot.

Frequently asked questions

Which temple is the main one at Kanyakumari?

The main temple is the Kanyakumari Amman temple, also called the Bhagavathi Amman temple, dedicated to the goddess as Kanyakumari. The district lists the Kanyakumari Bhagavathi Amman temple timings as 4.30 am to 12.15 pm and 4 pm to 8.15 pm.

What are the Suchindram temple timings?

Temple timings change on festival days, so we check them for your date. We stop there on Day 4 morning on the way out of Kanyakumari, so it fits the morning hours.

What is special about Kanyakumari?

It is the southern tip of mainland India. You see the sun rise and set over the sea, take the ferry to Vivekananda Rock and visit the Kanyakumari Gandhi Mandapam, which the district lists as open 7 am to 7 pm with free entry.

Can we do the trip in reverse, Kanyakumari first?

Yes. We can reverse the route if your dates suit Kanyakumari first. The drive between them is the same either way. If you reverse it, your first evening is at the sunset point.

Can we add Madurai?

Yes, with an extra day. Our Madurai, Rameswaram and Kanyakumari 7-day trip does it at an easier pace, and the Madurai and Rameswaram 4-day trip swaps Kanyakumari for Madurai.

Who is this package not for?

Anyone who cannot sit through two 8-hour driving days. Pick the 7-day trip instead. For a lighter east-coast pilgrimage, try our Velankanni and Nagore 3-day trip. For a longer southern circuit that adds Trivandrum, see the Madurai to Trivandrum 6-day tour.

What are the payment and cancellation terms?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.
