Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Madurai

    Pickup in Coimbatore. A morning stop at the Isha Yoga Center is on request, and we plan the day around it. Drive to Madurai and visit Meenakshi Temple in the evening. Night in Madurai.

  2. Day 2: Madurai to Rameswaram

    Drive to Rameswaram, crossing to the island next to the Pamban rail bridge. Darshan at Ramanathaswamy Temple. Night in Rameswaram.

  3. Day 3: Dhanushkodi and on to Kanyakumari

    Early visit to Dhanushkodi at the tip of the island, then the long drive down the coast to Kanyakumari in time for sunset. Night in Kanyakumari.

  4. Day 4: Kanyakumari

    Ferry to the Vivekananda Rock Memorial and Thiruvalluvar Statue, then Suchindram and the Bhagavathi Amman temple. Second night in Kanyakumari.

  5. Day 5: Kanyakumari to Thanjavur

    A long road day north. Evening at the Thanjavur Big Temple. Night in Thanjavur.

  6. Day 6: Thanjavur to Trichy

    Morning in Thanjavur, then a stop at Kallanai on the way to Trichy. Afternoon at Srirangam and the Jambukeswarar Temple. Night in Trichy.

  7. Day 7: Drive back to Coimbatore

    Climb the Rockfort early if you like, then drive back to Coimbatore, about 245 km and around 4.5 to 5.5 hours with stops. We drop you at your pickup point.

How far / how to reach

Madurai is about 210 km from Coimbatore. Madurai to Rameswaram is about 170 km, Rameswaram to Kanyakumari about 300 km, Kanyakumari to Thanjavur about 425 km, Thanjavur to Trichy about 65 km, and Trichy to Coimbatore about 245 km. Days 3 and 5 are long drives, and drive times depend on traffic and stops.

Places you will see

Meenakshi Temple has five main gateways and the Hall of a Thousand Pillars. The Madurai district page on the temple gives its usual hours as 5 am to 12.30 pm and 4 pm to 9.30 pm.

The Pamban Bridge links Rameswaram island to the mainland, and Dhanushkodi, the southern tip of the island, was washed away by a cyclone in 1964, according to Ramanathapuram district's tourist places list.

At Kanyakumari, the district lists the Vivekananda Rock Memorial, the Thiruvalluvar Statue, Suchindram and the meeting point of three seas among its main tourist places. The ferry stops when the sea is rough.

Thanjavur's Big Temple rises 212 ft. Kallanai is often placed near Trichy, but the Grand Anicut (Kallanai), built by Karikala Chola in the 2nd century AD, sits on the Cauvery in Thanjavur district, between the two cities. In Trichy, the Jambukeswarar Temple, 2 km east of Srirangam, is one of the famous temples near Srirangam, and the Rockfort is home to the Trichy Vinayagar temple, Ucchi Pillaiyar Kovil (Tiruchirappalli district tourist places).

Best time to go

October to March is cooler for barefoot temple walks; April to June is very hot. The sea can be rough in the southwest monsoon months and the Kanyakumari ferry may not run.

Frequently asked questions

Can you start or end the trip in Trichy?

No. All our trips start and end in Coimbatore, and this one finishes with the drive back from Trichy on Day 7.

Can we add the Brahmapureeswarar temple near Trichy?

Yes. The Brahmapureeswarar temple at Thirupattur is a short detour from Trichy and fits on Day 6 or the morning of Day 7, depending on temple timings on the day. Tell us before booking so we plan the day around it.

What if the Kanyakumari ferry is not running?

The ferry stops when the sea is rough. If it is cancelled on Day 4, we try again early on Day 5 before leaving, or you see the memorial from the shore. Ferry tickets are not part of the package price.

Is this trip suitable for elderly parents?

Yes, though Days 3 and 5 are long drives and temples mean barefoot walking on stone. We pick a roomy vehicle, plan rest stops and can add a night.

Who should pick a different package?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.
