Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Velankanni, Basilica and evening mass

    Leave Coimbatore early and drive via Trichy and Thanjavur. Check in, rest, then walk to the Basilica for evening mass. Overnight in Velankanni.

  2. Day 2: Nagore Dargah, Nagapattinam and Velankanni beach

    Drive north to Nagore Dargah in the morning, then stop in Nagapattinam town on the way back. The late afternoon is free for Velankanni beach and the shrines around the Basilica. Second night in Velankanni.

  3. Day 3: Morning prayer and return to Coimbatore

    Attend morning mass or prayer, check out after breakfast and drive back to Coimbatore, reaching by evening.

How far / how to reach

The Nagapattinam district's Velankanni page describes the Basilica of Our Lady of Health as one of the most visited pilgrim centres in India, with Gothic architecture, white walls and a red tiled roof, and a separate shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows. Many visitors, including people of other faiths, simply call it the Velankanni temple.

Nagore Dargah, near Nagapattinam, is the shrine of the saint known as Nagore Andavar. The district's places of interest page records that he passed away in 1558 and that the Kandoori festival marks his anniversary, drawing visitors of all faiths. Most visitors combine Velankanni and Nagore, the two best-known pilgrim sites near Nagapattinam.

Best time to go

October to February is the most comfortable on the coast. The annual Velankanni feast in late August and early September brings very large crowds, and hotels fill months ahead. Feast dates are announced by the shrine each year, so check them before you choose your travel dates. The north-east monsoon, roughly October to December, can bring heavy rain and cyclone warnings to this coast, so we watch the forecast with you.

Can our parish group travel together?

Yes. Tell us the head count and we quote a Tempo Traveller, Urbania, coach van or bus with one driver who stays with the group all three days. Pickup can be from your church. See our bus rental page for seat options.

Can we attend mass in Tamil or English?

Yes. The shrine holds masses in several languages through the day; see the shrine's mass timing page linked above for current times. Tell us your preferred mass and we plan around it.

Can we travel during the Velankanni feast?

You can travel during the feast, but expect crowds and higher hotel rates. We need your dates early to secure rooms.

Can we add Thanjavur on the way?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.
