Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Chikmagalur via Hassan, Mullayanagiri sunset

    This is a long drive of around 8 hours with stops, so we leave before dawn. After check-in we head up to Mullayanagiri for the evening if the light and the weather allow.

  2. Day 2: Baba Budangiri, Hebbe Falls, Jhari Falls, Coffee Museum

    Morning on the Baba Budangiri ridge, then Jhari Falls in the coffee estates and the drive to Kemmangundi for Hebbe Falls. We end at the Coffee Museum if it is open and time allows.

  3. Day 3: Belur and Halebidu, return to Coimbatore

    Belur's Chennakeshava Temple in the morning, Halebidu after, then the drive home. It is a long drive, so you will reach Coimbatore late at night.

How far / how to reach

Chikmagalur is reached by road from Coimbatore via Mysore and Hassan. This is the longest drive among our Karnataka hill trips, so we keep stops short on the travel days.

Places you will see

Karnataka Tourism describes Mullayanagiri on its Mullayanagiri page as 1,930 m high, the highest in the state. The road ends below the top and you climb the rest on steps. The Chikkamagaluru district Mullayanagiri page notes the road is narrow. If you want Mullayanagiri trekking on the old foot trail, ask us; it needs extra time and a local guide. Entry depends on the forest department on the day; if the trail is closed, we swap in another stop nearby.

Bababudangiri and Mullayanagiri sit on the same ridge, which is why we split the two peaks across Day 1 and Day 2. Baba Budangiri is where Baba Budan is said to have planted the first coffee seeds in India in the 17th century, according to the Chikkamagaluru destination guide.

Hebbe Falls is about 65 km from Chikmagalur. The last 7 km from Kemmangundi are on foot or by local 4x4 jeep, paid on the spot. Jhari Falls is also called Buttermilk Falls and sits among coffee estates.

At Belur, King Vishnuvardhana built the Chennakeshava Temple in 1116 AD; Halebidu is about 16 km away. If you have time, Yagachi, the Belur dam, is close to the temple town, per the Beluru guide.

Best time to go

September to March. Hebbe Falls is best from August to January, says Karnataka Tourism, and the monsoon months bring leeches, slippery paths and closures. Mullayanagiri is often in cloud during the rains.

Frequently asked questions

Is this trip suitable for young children?

It is a heavy plan for under-tens: two long drive days, steps at Mullayanagiri and a jeep ride to Hebbe. A slower option is our Chikmagalur weekend tour, or we can drop one waterfall.

Can we add Shravanabelagola?

Not on this plan without an extra night. It fits in our Belur, Halebidu and Shravanabelagola trip.

What if Hebbe Falls is closed?

Access can close after heavy rain or by forest order. We replace it with another stop the same day, such as Z Point or Kemmangundi.

What are the payment and cancellation terms?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.

Who should pick a different trip?
