Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1: Coimbatore to Shravanabelagola, on to Hassan
We drive north through Mysore to Shravanabelagola, roughly 300 km and around 7 hours with stops. You climb Vindhyagiri in the cooler part of the afternoon, then take a short drive to Hassan for the night.
Day 2: Belur and Halebidu
Morning at the Chennakeshava Temple in Belur, then Halebidu, about 16 km away, for the Hoysaleswara Temple. Back in Hassan by evening.
Day 3: Shettihalli Rosary Church, return to Coimbatore
Short drive to Shettihalli, then home. This is a light day by design, so you reach Coimbatore at a sensible hour.
How far / how to reach
All by road from Coimbatore through Mysore. Hassan is the base because Belur, Halebidu and Shettihalli are each a short drive from it, well under an hour each way.
Places you will see
What is Shravanabelagola famous for? The 981 AD statue of Gommateshwara (Bahubali), carved from one block of granite on top of Vindhyagiri Hill by the minister Chavundaraya. On the statue's height, Karnataka Tourism's Shravanabelagola page gives 58 feet; other official pages round it to 18 m. The climb to the Bahubali statue is over 600 rock-cut steps.
There is more here than the statue: Chandragiri Hill opposite has old Jain basadis and memorials, and the same page records over 600 inscriptions from the 7th to 19th centuries. The Mahamastakabhisheka, when the statue is bathed in milk and other offerings, is held every 12 years.
At Belur, the Chennakeshava Temple was built by Hoysala king Vishnuvardhana in 1116 AD. Halebidu, the old Hoysala capital, has the Hoysaleswara Temple, and the Kedareshwara Temple, which visitors often miss is also in Halebidu, so we can add it if time allows. Belur and Halebidu, with Somanathapura, were listed by UNESCO in 2023 as the Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas.
The Shettihalli church is a roofless French Gothic church about 160 years old, on the Hemavathi backwaters. In the monsoon it stands partly under water; in summer you can walk around it. Yagachi Dam near Belur is a picnic spot we can add on Day 2, per the Beluru guide.
Best time to go
October to March is cool for the Shravanabelagola climb. Summer afternoons on the bare rock are hot; in April and May we may move the climb to an early start on Day 2. For Shettihalli, July to October shows the church in water; February to May shows the whole structure.

Frequently asked questions
What are the Shravanabelagola timings and climbing rules?
Temple timings and entry rules change, so we check them for your travel date and plan the climb around them. Wear shoes that are easy to take off, as footwear is not allowed on the sacred steps. The climb is steep, so tell us about knee or heart conditions and we can plan Chandragiri, which is lower, instead.
Can non-Jains visit the temples at Shravanabelagola?
Yes, visitors of all faiths can see the Gommateshwara statue and the basadis. Dress modestly and follow the rules at each shrine.
What are the Belur temple timings?
Timings and any ticket for the temple complex can change, so we check them for your date. We reach Belur in the morning so you have time before the midday heat.
Do we need a guide at Belur and Halebidu?
Not required, but the carvings make far more sense with one. Local guides are usually available at both temples and are paid directly, and you agree the fee with the guide on the spot.
What are the payment and cancellation terms?
A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.
Who should pick a different trip?
If you want the coffee hills too, take the Chikmagalur 3-day trip, which stops at Belur and Halebidu. For nature near Hassan, see the Sakleshpur 3-day escape. For a city break with Mysore, try our 3 days in Bangalore. For more temples and ruins, see the Hampi and Badami in 4 days. More on our Hassan and Karnataka pages.
