How far and how to reach

This is a driving-heavy week. Day 4 (Kanyakumari to Kodaikanal) and Day 6 (Kodaikanal to Ooty) are each a full day in the vehicle. Day 4 is about 335 km and around 7 to 8 hours with stops. Day 6 is about 250 km and around 5.5 to 6.5 hours.

The Madurai to Ooty distance is close to 290 km by road, a direct drive through Dindigul and Coimbatore. On this tour you do not make that drive in one go; Kodaikanal sits in between and breaks the trip. There is also no direct Madurai to Ooty train; rail travellers change at Coimbatore or Mettupalayam. Check current timings on the Indian Railways site before you book.

Vehicles from outside the district need an e-pass to enter Kodaikanal and the Nilgiris. E-pass rules change, so we check what applies on your travel date and apply where needed.

Places you will see

The Madurai district list of tourist places describes the Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple as the centre the city grew around. It also lists the Thirumalai Nayak Palace, built in 1636 and about 1.5 km away, if you have time on Day 1.

Rameswaram is reached by the Pamban road bridge across the sea, covered on the Ramanathapuram district page on Pamban Bridge. The Kanniyakumari district tourist places list covers the Vivekananda Rock Memorial and the Thiruvalluvar statue off the cape.

Kodaikanal and Ooty are two of the best-known hill stations in the south. Ooty's Doddabetta, at 2,623 m, is the highest peak in Tamil Nadu according to the Nilgiris district page on Doddabetta, and it ranks among the highest peaks in South India. If you want hills in South India and the big southern temples in one trip, this plan fits both into a week.

Best time to go

October to March suits the coast best, when the heat in Madurai and Rameswaram is lower. Kodaikanal and Ooty are cool all year but wet in the monsoon. April and May are the busiest months in both hill stations, so book early.

Vehicle for your group size

The vehicle is part of the package price. We match it to your group, and you can ask for a different one.

Frequently asked questions

Is 7 days enough for all five places?

Enough for the main sights, but two days are long drives. Add a night in Kanyakumari or Madurai if you want more time, or see our 12-day Tamil Nadu tour. Our Kanyakumari trips page lists other ways to spend time at the cape.

Which vehicle will we get?

It depends on group size and is named in your quote. Families of five or more usually prefer an Innova Crysta on long days.

What if the Vivekananda Rock ferry is not running?

The ferry stops in rough sea or when the operator pauses it. If it is off, you see the memorial and statue from the shore and we use the time for Suchindram or the beach.

Can we change the plan?

Yes. Common changes are skipping Rameswaram or swapping Ooty for a second Kodaikanal day.

What are your payment and cancellation terms?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.

Who is this not for?

Travellers who dislike long hours in a car, and seniors who need short drives. For them, our 4-day Madurai and Rameswaram plan or a single hill station trip is easier. Palani and Kodaikanal in 4 days keeps the drives short. For a quick hill break, try Yercaud in 2 days. For temples only, there is a Tiruvannamalai and Kanchipuram trip.
