Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Ooty, local sights

    Pickup in Coimbatore and the drive up through Mettupalayam. Afternoon at the lake and its boat house, then the gardens in town. Your Ooty local sightseeing cab is the one that brought you up, so there is nothing extra to book.

  2. Day 2: Coonoor and Doddabetta

    Morning in Coonoor for Sim's Park and the valley viewpoints. On the way back, Doddabetta. Second night in Ooty.

  3. Day 3: Across to Kodaikanal, lake boating

    The long transfer day: down from the Nilgiris and up the Palani hills. The drive is around 6 to 7 hours with stops. Arrive in time for a boat ride on the lake before dark. Overnight in Kodaikanal.

  4. Day 4: Pillar Rocks, Guna Caves and Mannavanur Lake

    Pillar Rocks and the Guna Caves area first, then the drive out to Mannavanur Lake and its grasslands. Visitors view the Guna Caves from a fenced area; you cannot enter the caves. Entry depends on the forest department on the day; if a stop is closed, we swap in another stop nearby.

  5. Day 5: Bear Shola Falls, Bryant Park, shopping and return

    Bear Shola Falls is a short trip from the lake, then Bryant Park and an hour for shopping before the long drive back to Coimbatore, which takes around 3.5 to 4.5 hours with stops.

How far / how to reach

We drive you from Coimbatore. If you arrive by train, we pick you up at Coimbatore Junction: Coimbatore railway station to Ooty is a road trip through Mettupalayam, around 2.5 to 3.5 hours with stops. Mettupalayam is the nearest broad gauge station, and the toy train continues up to Ooty station on the metre gauge line, as the district notes. Kodaikanal's nearest station is Kodai Road and its nearest airport is Madurai.

Places you will see

Doddabetta, the highest peak in Tamil Nadu at 2,623 m above sea level, is about 10 km from Ooty bus stand, per the Nilgiris district page on Doddabetta. The Ooty tourist places page describes the 65-acre Ooty Lake, formed in 1824, with boating. Kodaikanal sits about 7,200 feet up in the upper Palani hills, and the Dindigul district page suggests rowing on the lake, walks through the woods and horse riding or cycling around the lake. Bear Shola is a seasonal fall, fullest after the monsoon.

Best time to go

March to June is the main season in both towns, and May is the busiest. After the monsoon, the falls run fuller and the hills are greener. Boating stops in bad weather, so keep a flexible hour.

Is boating included?

No. Boating in Ooty at the boat house and Kodaikanal boating are paid on the spot. Ooty boat house timings change by season, so the driver checks on the day.

Which Sterling property will we stay at?

We suggest a Sterling resort for Ooty. Sterling has more than one resort in Ooty, for example Sterling Fern Hill Ooty; the quote names the exact property, which may be a similar resort.

How is this different from the 4-day trip?

The 4-day Ooty and Kodaikanal package has one night in Kodaikanal and adds Pykara. This one has two Kodaikanal nights and adds Doddabetta, Guna Caves and Mannavanur. For Ooty alone, try our 3-day Ooty sightseeing trip. The Ooty and Mudumalai 4-day trip adds forest time, and the Palani and Kodaikanal trip adds the hill temple.

Which railway station is closest to Ooty?

The Ooty toy train station serves the hill line, but the nearest station to Ooty on the main broad gauge network is Mettupalayam. If you come by rail, Coimbatore Junction is the easiest place for us to meet you.

How do payment and cancellation work?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.
