Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Ooty, lake and gardens

    Pickup in Coimbatore and the climb through Mettupalayam. After check-in, Ooty Lake, then the Ooty gardens: the Botanical Garden, laid out in 1897 over 55 acres, and the terraced Rose Garden, as listed on the Nilgiris district page for Ooty.

  2. Day 2: Coonoor and Pykara

    Morning in Coonoor for Sim's Park and the viewpoints, afternoon at Pykara Lake and Falls, about 20 km west of Ooty according to the district's Pykara page. Coonoor and Pykara sit on opposite sides of Ooty, so this is a full day.

  3. Day 3: Across to Kodaikanal

    The long day. The drive from Ooty to Kodaikanal goes down to the plains and up the Palani hills, around 6 to 7 hours with stops, longer on season weekends. On arrival, Silver Cascade on the ghat road, Coaker's Walk and an evening at Kodai Lake. Overnight in Kodaikanal.

  4. Day 4: Kodaikanal sightseeing and return

    Pillar Rocks, the pine forest, Green Valley View and Kurinji Andavar Temple, then down the ghat and back to Coimbatore, a drive of around 3.5 to 4.5 hours with stops, so you reach home in the evening or at night. We drop you at your pickup point.

How far / how to reach

We drive from Coimbatore to Ooty through Mettupalayam, across to Kodaikanal on Day 3, and back to Coimbatore on Day 4. Kodaikanal has no railway station; the nearest is Kodai Road, and the nearest airport is Madurai, per the Dindigul district page. All our trips start and end in Coimbatore. Places you will see

Kodaikanal stands about 7,200 feet above sea level in the upper Palani hills, says the Dindigul district page on Kodaikanal, which also mentions rowing on the lake and walks through the woods. The Kurinji Andavar temple is a Murugan shrine named after the kurinji flower. The kurinji flower blooms once in about 12 years; Dindigul district ran a Kurunji Festival in 2018 for the last mass bloom.

In the Nilgiris, Ooty and Coonoor feel different: Ooty is the busier town with the lake and gardens, Coonoor is lower, quieter and full of tea estates.

Best time to go

March to June suits both towns. Ooty and Kodaikanal stay cool in summer; May is pleasant for sightseeing, though May is also the most crowded month. The monsoon brings fog on both ghat roads, and Pillar Rocks can be hidden in cloud.

Is Day 3 too long?

It is the hardest day of this trip. If you want a calmer pace, our 5-day Ooty and Kodaikanal trip adds a second night in Kodaikanal.

Can we skip Ooty or Kodaikanal?

Yes, but then a single-town package fits better: the Ooty Coonoor 3 days package or the Kodaikanal 4 days package. For Ooty alone, see Ooty sightseeing for 3 days. To add a forest stay, there is Ooty with Mudumalai. For Kodaikanal with a temple visit, try Palani and Kodaikanal.

Can we add the toy train?

The Ooty toy train starts from Mettupalayam, on the metre gauge line the Nilgiris district mentions. We can drop you at Mettupalayam and meet you in Ooty if you hold tickets. Train tickets are not included.

Is Ooty in Tamil Nadu?

Yes. Ooty is in the Nilgiris district, and Kodaikanal is in Dindigul district, so the whole trip stays in one state.

How do payment and cancellation work?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.
