Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Wayanad

    Hill drive and check-in.

  2. Day 2: Wayanad sightseeing

A full day of Wayanad sights, chosen with you before the trip. Many families include Banasura Sagar Dam (see below).

  3. Day 3: Wayanad to Athirapally Falls

A long road day down to the plains and across to Athirapally. You see the falls in the evening light.

  4. Day 4: Athirapally to Munnar

    The climb to Munnar.

  5. Day 5: Days 5 and 6: Munnar

Two full days in the tea hills: Eravikulam National Park, Mattupetty, tea estates and viewpoints, at a slow pace. Eravikulam can be closed for part of the year and entry depends on the forest department on the day; if it is closed, we swap in another stop nearby.

  6. Day 6: Munnar to Thekkady (Periyar)

A scenic drive to Thekkady. Afternoon spice garden or the Periyar lake boat ride if tickets are available.

  7. Day 7: Thekkady to Alleppey, houseboat

Down to Alleppey and onto a houseboat around midday. Night on the backwaters.

  8. Day 8: Alleppey to Kovalam

    The drive south to Kovalam.

  9. Day 9: Kovalam and Trivandrum

Trivandrum sightseeing, usually the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple and the Napier Museum, then back to the beach.

  10. Day 10: Kovalam to Cochin

    The drive north to Kochi.

  11. Day 11: Fort Kochi, return to Coimbatore

A morning in Fort Kochi, then the drive home to Coimbatore.

How far does this trip go?

The loop is long: about 1,350 km between stops, more with local sightseeing. The longest drives are Day 3 (Wayanad to Athirapally, around 4.5 to 5.5 hours with stops), Day 11 (Kovalam to Kochi, around 4.5 to 5.5 hours) and Day 12 (Kochi to Coimbatore, around 4 to 5 hours).

Places you will see

Wayanad and Banasura Sagar. Ask for the biggest dam in Kerala and you will hear two answers. The Idukki district page describes the Idukki arch dam as about 169 m tall, one of the highest arch dams in Asia; it is not on this route. Banasura Sagar in Wayanad is India's largest earth dam, according to the Wayanad district page, and it fits easily into Day 2.

Athirapally. On the Chalakudy River and the largest waterfall in Kerala, says the Thrissur district page.

Munnar and the high peaks. Munnar sits about 1,600 m up. Anamudi, inside Eravikulam National Park, is the highest peak in South India, according to the Idukki district page on Munnar. Meesapulimala, the second highest peak in Kerala, is also near Munnar and can be added as a guided trek on Day 5 or 6 if the forest authority allows it on your date. Trek rules and fees are set by the authority, so we check them for your dates.

Thekkady. Home of the Periyar Tiger Reserve; boat and nature walk bookings are on the official Periyar Tiger Reserve site. For a quieter hill stay after it, see our 3-day Vagamon trip.

Alleppey. Vembanad Lake runs 84 km from Alappuzha to Kochi, per the Alappuzha district backwaters page.

Trivandrum. The Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, with Vishnu in the reclining posture, is the Kerala Perumal temple most Tamil families ask us about. It has a strict dress code. Dress rules and entry rules can change, so we confirm them before the visit.

Best time to go

October to March suits the whole route: cool in Munnar and Wayanad, calm seas at Kovalam and dry roads for the long drives. Athirapally is fullest in the monsoon, June to September, but heavy rain slows ghat roads and can close viewpoints, which matters on a 12-day loop.

Vehicle for your group size

The vehicle is part of the package price. We match it to your group, and you can ask for a different one.

Frequently asked questions

What is included in this 12-day Kerala trip?

Your AC vehicle and driver for 12 days, pickup and drop in Coimbatore, 11 nights' stay, the sightseeing on this page, and fuel, toll, parking and driver charges. Meals, entry tickets and activity fees are extra. The written quote lists every item.

Can we cut it to 8 or 9 days?

Yes. Dropping Wayanad or Kovalam saves two to three days. For beaches only, try Varkala and Kovalam in 4 days. For Wayanad and the hills alone, try our Munnar and Wayanad 4-day trip. If you only want hills and backwaters, the Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey 6-day tour already covers the core.

What happens if Periyar boat tickets sell out?

The Periyar boat ride is run by the forest department and sells out on busy days. We try to get tickets when available; if not, we book a spice garden walk or a nature walk instead.

Who is this package not for?

If you want Ooty and Mysore as well, choose the South India 15-day tour. For a week or less, pick one region instead, such as our Kerala hills and backwaters trips or the 6-day Munnar, Athirapally and Kumarakom trip.

How do we pay, and what if we cancel?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.
