Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Varkala, the cliff and Papanasam Beach

    This is the longest drive of the trip, so we leave Coimbatore very early. You reach Varkala in the late afternoon, check in and walk the cliff path at sunset before going down to Papanasam Beach.

  2. Day 2: Kappil Lake, Janardhana Temple and beach time

    In the morning, drive north to Kappil Lake. On the way back, stop at the Janardhana Swamy Temple. The afternoon is free for the beach or the cafes on the cliff.

  3. Day 3: Varkala to Kovalam, Lighthouse Beach and Trivandrum sights

    Check out and head south. You visit Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram) on the way, with Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple as the main stop. In the evening, you settle in at Kovalam near Lighthouse Beach.

  4. Day 4: Poovar (optional) and return to Coimbatore

    If you want, we can stop at Poovar on the way out for a short look at the estuary. Your written quote states exactly what is included, including any boat ride or extra charge. Then comes the drive back to Coimbatore, about 410 km and around 8.5 to 9.5 hours with stops, and we drop you at your pickup point. It is a long day, and an extra night on the way can be added on request.

How far are Varkala and Kovalam from Coimbatore?

Varkala is about 345 km from Coimbatore by road via Palakkad, Kochi and Kollam, a drive of around 7 to 8 hours. Kovalam is further south, so the drive home on Day 4 is longer. All our trips start and end in Coimbatore.

Varkala beaches

Varkala is the only beach in southern Kerala with cliffs right beside the Arabian Sea, according to Kerala Tourism's Varkala page. Papanasam, the main beach at Varkala, is a sacred bathing spot; the name means "destruction of sins". The cliff top above it has a long walkway lined with cafes.

The Janardhana Swamy Temple sits on a hill where the road leads down to the beach, and Kerala Tourism puts its history at around 2,000 years. Kappil, a short drive north, is where a backwater lake runs right up to the sea.

Kovalam and Trivandrum

Kovalam's best-known landmark is the 118-foot Vizhinjam lighthouse above Lighthouse Beach, which has stood there since 1972, according to Kerala Tourism's Kovalam lighthouse page. Lighthouse Beach, Hawah Beach and Samudra Beach are the main stretches.

Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Trivandrum is the stop most guests ask about. Its official website is the place to check darshan sessions and rules.

Best time to go

October to March is the beach season, with calmer sea and drier days. From June to September the monsoon brings rough sea, and swimming is not safe on many days. Swim only where lifeguards or flags say it is safe, and ask your driver or hotel about the sea that day.

How do I find the Padmanabhaswamy Temple timings?

For the Padmanabhaswamy Temple timings today, check the temple's official website or call the temple office on the morning of your visit, because darshan sessions shift on festival days. The temple follows a strict traditional dress code for men and women, so plan your clothes for Day 3 in advance.

Is the drive too long for four days?

Day 1 and Day 4 are long road days. Days 2 and 3 are short. If that sounds like too much, add a night on the way home or a fifth day. Tell us when you ask for a quote.

Can we change the plan?

Yes. You can skip Poovar, spend all three nights in Varkala or swap Kappil for more beach time. Changes are made before we confirm the quote.

Which vehicle will we get?

It depends on group size: sedans, Ertiga, Innova, Innova Crysta and Innova Hycross for small groups, Tempo Travellers and Force Urbania for bigger ones, and coach vans or buses beyond that. The quote names the vehicle.

How do payment and cancellation work?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.

Who should pick a different package?

If you want backwaters and hills rather than beaches, the 6-day Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey trip is the better fit.
