Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Cochin, Fort Kochi

    We leave early so you reach Fort Kochi with daylight to spare. You walk past the Chinese fishing nets on the waterfront, then visit Mattancherry Palace and the lanes of Jew Town. Night in Cochin. Suggested stay: Casino Hotel or a similar 3-star hotel, confirmed in your quote. Some Fort Kochi sights close on one day of the week, so we plan the order around your travel date.

  2. Day 2: Cochin to Athirapally and Vazhachal

    A morning drive north takes you to Athirapally Falls, then a short hop up the same road to Vazhachal. Afternoon free at the resort. Suggested stay: Rainforest or a similar 3-star hotel, confirmed in your quote.

  3. Day 3: Athirapally to Alleppey, houseboat night

    You drive south to Alleppey and board your houseboat around midday. The boat cruises the backwaters through the afternoon and moors for the night.

  4. Day 4: Alleppey Beach, shopping, return to Coimbatore

    After checkout you spend some time at Alleppey Beach and pick up anything you want to take home, then drive back to Coimbatore for your drop.

How far is it from Coimbatore?

The trip is a loop by road. Coimbatore to Cochin is roughly 190 km through Palakkad and Thrissur, a 4 to 5 hour drive. The return from Alleppey is longer, roughly 240 km, and can take more time on season weekends.

Places you will see

Fort Kochi is the old western part of Kochi, about 12 km from Ernakulam town. The Ernakulam district page on Fort Kochi notes that the Mattancherry Palace was built by the Portuguese and given to the king of Cochin, and that the Jew Town synagogue dates from 1567.

Athirapally Falls is on the Chalakudy River. The Thrissur district guide to Athirappilly waterfall calls it the largest waterfall in Kerala, about 80 feet tall, and puts it 73 km from Kochi. Vazhachal is a short drive further up the river.

Best time to go

October to March is the easiest season for this route: drier roads, comfortable heat and calm water for the houseboat. Athirapally carries the most water in the monsoon months, June to September, and many people come for that, but rain can slow the drive and the falls area can close on heavy-rain days. Entry depends on the forest department on the day; if the falls are closed, we swap in another stop nearby.

Can we drop Athirapally and spend longer in Alleppey?

Can we visit the Ernakulathappan temple in Ernakulam, and when is it open?

The Ernakulathappan (Ernakulam Shiva) temple is in Ernakulam city, so we can add a darshan stop on Day 1 evening or Day 2 morning. The temple opens before dawn, closes around late morning and reopens in the evening. Temple timings change on festival days, so we check them for your date.

Who is this package not for?
