Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Alleppey, houseboat check-in and backwater cruise

    We leave Coimbatore early, around dawn, so you reach the Alleppey jetty in time for houseboat check-in; the boat operator's exact check-in time is confirmed in your quote. The boat cruises through the backwater canals in the afternoon. In the evening it moors near a village bank for the night. Your driver and vehicle wait on shore.

  2. Day 2: Alleppey Beach or Marari Beach and return to Coimbatore

    After breakfast on board, the houseboat returns to the jetty and you check out in the morning. Choose Alleppey Beach, close to town, or the quieter Marari Beach to the north. After a couple of hours by the sea, we drive back to Coimbatore and drop you at your chosen point.

How far is Alleppey from Coimbatore?

The road runs via Palakkad, Thrissur and Kochi, roughly 250 km and around 5 to 6 hours depending on traffic around Kochi. Day 1 and Day 2 each have one long drive. If that is too much for older travellers, look at the 6-day Kerala trip below, which breaks the distance up.

Places you will see

Today's houseboats grew out of the kettuvallam, the old rice and spice cargo boats of the backwaters. Kerala Tourism's houseboat guide says modern boats have furnished bedrooms, toilets, a living area and a kitchen, and that Alappuzha alone has around 500 of them. That number is why choosing the right boat matters more than finding one.

The cruise usually takes in parts of Vembanad Lake and the Kuttanad paddy country, where fields sit below water level. Kerala Tourism's Alappuzha page lists both Alappuzha Beach and Marari Beach. Best time to go

Kerala Tourism names October to March as the best months for Alappuzha, when the weather is cooler and drier. The monsoon from June to September brings heavy rain but green fields and lower demand. December holidays and long weekends fill the better houseboats fast, so book a few weeks ahead for those dates.

Frequently asked questions

Is two days enough for Alleppey?

It is enough for one proper houseboat night, which is what most people come for. You will not have time for Kochi or Munnar. If you want a slower trip with a hill station, the 6-day Kerala package adds Munnar and Thekkady before the backwaters.

Does the houseboat cruise all night?

No. Houseboats moor for the night in the evening and start again the next morning. Operators follow local rules on cruising hours, and your quote states the timings for your boat.

Can we change the plan?

Yes. You can pick Marari over Alleppey Beach, skip the beach and leave early, or ask for a shorter day cruise instead of the overnight stay. Tell us before we confirm the quote so we can book the right boat.

Which vehicle will we get?

It depends on your group size. We use sedans, Ertiga, Innova, Innova Crysta and Innova Hycross, Tempo Travellers, Force Urbania, and coach vans or buses. The quote names the vehicle, and it stays with you for both days.

How do payment and cancellation work?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded. Houseboat owners can set their own terms, which we confirm with your quote.
