Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Athirapally via Chalakudy, Athirapally and Vazhachal falls

    We pick you up in the morning and drive through Palakkad and Thrissur district to Chalakudy, then inland to Athirapally. You walk down to the viewpoints at Athirapally Waterfalls, the falls many people know from the film Baahubali, then drive a short way up the road to Vazhachal Falls. Check in near the falls.

  2. Day 2: Thumboormuzhi Dam and Butterfly Park, Vadakkunnathan Temple, back to Coimbatore

    On the road back towards Chalakudy you stop at Thumboormuzhi Dam and its butterfly park. Then on to Thrissur for Vadakkunnathan Temple, and the drive home to Coimbatore.

How far / how to reach

Athirapally is in Thrissur district, inland from Chalakudy. Kerala Tourism puts it 63 km from Thrissur. From Coimbatore it is a half-day drive through Palakkad. The return on Day 2 passes through Thrissur town, which is why the temple stop fits.

Places you will see

Athirapally and Vazhachal. Kerala Tourism's Athirappilly and Vazhachal page says the main fall drops 80 feet at the edge of the Sholayar forest ranges and that Vazhachal is less than 5 km further on. It also warns that the rocks at Vazhachal are very slippery, so stay behind the barriers.

Thumboormuzhi. A dam on the Chalakudy river with a butterfly garden, a children's park and a hanging bridge across to Ezhattumugham, according to the Thumboormozhi page on Kerala Tourism, which counts more than 140 butterfly species.

Vadakkunnathan Temple. Kerala Tourism's article on the Vadakkumnathan Temple describes one of the oldest temples in the state, set in nine walled acres in the middle of Thrissur and home ground of the Thrissur Pooram festival. Temples here have a dress code and entry rules that can change, so we tell you what to wear and what applies before the day.

Best time to go

Kerala Tourism says the falls are at their fullest in the monsoon, roughly June to October, and that winter brings mist and cooler weather. Heavy rain can close the falls area for safety. In April and May the flow drops a lot.

Frequently asked questions

Can we do Athirapally as a day trip instead?

Yes, if you prefer. A day trip from Coimbatore to the falls and back is possible but leaves little time at Vazhachal and no time for Thrissur. The overnight stay lets you see both falls without rushing. Ask us for a one-day quote.

Is Athirapally safe for children and older parents?

The lower viewpoint means walking down a path and climbing back up, which takes effort. Keep children close, and older parents can watch from the top viewpoint instead. Kerala Tourism warns that the Vazhachal rocks are slippery, so keep everyone behind the barriers.

What if the falls are closed because of heavy rain?

The falls area can be closed when the river runs high. If that happens on your date, we move your visit to Day 2 morning if it reopens, or add more time at Thumboormuzhi and Thrissur.

Can we visit Guruvayur too?

How do payment and cancellation work?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.
