Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Athirappilly and Vazhachal Falls

Drive into Kerala through Palakkad and Thrissur district. Your driver may change the route on the day to suit traffic and weather. Afternoon at Athirappilly Falls, then Vazhachal, 5 km up the road. Night near Athirappilly.

  2. Day 2: Athirappilly to Valparai via the Sholayar route

Cross the forest road past Sholayar and climb to Valparai. This road depends on forest rules and conditions on the day. Entry depends on the forest department on the day. If it is closed, we go round by road through Pollachi instead.

  3. Day 3: Nallamudi viewpoint, tea estates, dams and seasonal falls

Morning at Nallamudi viewpoint, then tea estates and the Upper Sholayar and Nirar dams. Seasonal falls along the roads fill up after rain. Viewpoint access depends on the weather and the authority on the day; if it is closed, we swap in another stop nearby.

  4. Day 4: Aliyar and Monkey Falls, then home

Drive down the hairpin bends to Monkey Falls and Aliyar Dam, then on to Coimbatore by evening.

Places you will see

Athirappilly Falls drops about 80 feet into the Chalakudy river at the entrance of the Sholayar forest ranges, 63 km from Thrissur, says Kerala Tourism. Vazhachal, 5 km further, is known for hornbills.

Valparai sits above 3,500 feet on the Anamalai range, 102 km from Coimbatore and 60 km from Athirapalli, per the Coimbatore district page on Valparai. The same page counts around 40 hairpin bends on the climb from Pollachi and puts Upper Sholayar Dam 15 km and Nirar Dam 7 km from town. Lion-tailed macaques and hornbills are often seen.

Aliyar Dam is 81 m high, built between 1959 and 1969, with a park and boating, says the district's Aliyar page.

Best time to go

This is a monsoon waterfall trip, so the falls are fullest from June to September. Expect rain, mist and possible road closures. The Coimbatore district names October to November and March to May as the best months for Valparai sightseeing, when roads are drier and views clearer. Falls areas can close on heavy-rain days, and we adjust the day if that happens.

Vehicle for your group size

The vehicle is part of the package price. We match it to your group, and you can ask for a different one.

Frequently asked questions

Can we swim at the waterfalls?

We advise against getting into the water at Athirappilly. At Monkey Falls, follow the rules posted at the gate, as they change with water levels.

What if the Sholayar road is closed?

We go round through Pollachi on Day 2 and add Sholayar views from the Valparai side on Day 3.

Is the Valparai road safe in the rain?

In heavy rain we drive slower, avoid the road after dark and may skip a stop.

Can we do just Valparai?

Yes. The Valparai and Pollachi nature trail is a 3-day plan, and the Pollachi, Aliyar and Monkey Falls day tour takes one day. For a short stay, there is also a 2-day Valparai trip.

How do payment and cancellation work?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.

Who is this package not for?

People prone to motion sickness may find the bends hard. Pilgrims who want Guruvayur with Athirappilly should see our Guruvayur and Athirapally trip. For fewer bends and more forest, try the Pollachi and Topslip 2-day trip.
