Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore, Pollachi, Aliyar and the climb

    Pickup in Coimbatore and south to Pollachi. Past Pollachi you reach Aliyar Dam at the foot of the hills, then the Kavi Aruvi waterfall a little way up the ghat. After that come the 40 hairpin bends, with a stop at Loam's View Point for the view back down the ghat. Check in at Valparai in the evening.

  2. Day 2: Tea estates, Nallamudi and Sholayar Dam

    A full day around Valparai. Morning at Nallamudi View Point, then the tea estates, then Sholayar Dam (the district lists Upper Sholayar about 15 km from Valparai). You come back to the same room, so there is no packing.

  3. Day 3: Slow morning and the drive down

    Catch any stop the weather spoiled earlier, then drive down through the hairpins and Pollachi to your Coimbatore drop point by evening.

How far is Valparai and how to reach

The district gives Valparai as 102 km from Coimbatore and 64 km from Pollachi. The bus uses the same road, so the Coimbatore to Valparai bus distance is 102 km too; state buses run from Coimbatore and Pollachi, but they take longer with stops. In our vehicle, plan on around 2.5 to 3.5 hours including the ghat section.

Places you will see

Monkey Falls (Kavi Aruvi) is a natural waterfall near Aliyar Dam on the Pollachi to Valparai road. The district listing gives its hours as 9 AM to 5 PM and the entry fee as ₹50 per person. Water flow drops in the dry months.

Valparai sits above 3,500 feet in the Anaimalai hills, among tea and coffee estates. The Valparai page from the Coimbatore district mentions lion-tailed macaques, Nilgiri langurs and barking deer in the area. Animals cross the road here; your driver will not stop where it is unsafe, and nobody feeds them.

The hairpin road is half the reason to come to Valparai. That is why we go up in daylight.

Best time to go

The district recommends October to November and March to May. The monsoon months bring heavy rain (the district notes Chinna Kallar near Valparai gets some of the highest rainfall in India); the estates are green but views can close in and waterfalls get crowded. Falls can be closed in heavy rain; entry depends on the forest department on the day, and if one is closed, we swap in another stop nearby.

The trip costs ₹10,500 to ₹13,000 per person. Your figure depends on dates, the hotel and group size, because the vehicle cost is shared: 8 people pay less each than 2. We send a sedan for up to 4, an Ertiga or Innova for 6 or 7, and a Tempo Traveller, Urbania or bus for bigger groups. The vehicle is named in your quote.

Can we bathe at Kavi Aruvi?

It is open 9 AM to 5 PM with a ₹50 ticket, as per the district page. Bathing depends on water level and forest staff on the day. The Monkey Falls contact number listed by the district is 04259-235385.

Can we change the plan or start from Pollachi?

Yes to changes: tell us what to add or skip when you ask for a quote. A Pollachi pickup is possible on request. Your written quote states exactly what is included, including any pickup outside Coimbatore.

Is the hairpin road safe for children and older people?

The road is narrow with tight bends, so people who get motion sick should sit in front and take a tablet before the climb. Our drivers know this ghat and take it slowly.

What are the payment and cancellation terms?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.

Who should pick a different package?

Only one free day? The Valparai one day tour does the run from Coimbatore and back. Want a jungle safari? The Pollachi and Topslip weekend covers the Anamalai tiger reserve side. If you want Topslip in the same three days, our Pollachi, Topslip and Valparai trip adds it. Waterfall lovers should look at Athirapally and Valparai in 4 days.
