Check out and drive north-west. Stop at Aihole, then Pattadakal, and reach Badami by evening.
Day 4: Badami caves and the drive home
Climb to the four cave temples in the morning, then start the drive back to Coimbatore, about 700 km and around 12 to 14 hours with stops. How far / how to reach
The whole trip is by road from Coimbatore. Hampi is about 12 km from Hosapete railway station, and Badami is about 140 km north-west of Hampi, per the Bagalkot district.
Places you will see
The Stone Chariot, Hampi's best-known landmark, stands in the courtyard of the Vijaya Vittala Temple. The Vijayanagara district page also points out the Ranga Mantapa's 56 musical pillars. Karnataka Tourism adds that the chariot is a shrine to Garuda and appears on the ₹50 note, and that the Vittala complex charges about ₹40 for Indian visitors.
Virupaksha is the one temple in Hampi still used for worship, with a nine-storey gopuram, says the district's Virupaksha page. Hampi became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986.
Aihole has about 125 temples in 22 groups, most built between the 6th and 8th centuries. Pattadakal is about 23 km from Badami, according to the Bagalkot district page, with its main temples built under the Chalukya king Vikramaditya II.
Badami was the Chalukya capital. Of its four cave temples, three are Hindu and one is Jain. Karnataka Tourism's Badami guide lists them open 6 am to 6 pm, ₹40 for Indians. Below the caves, the Bhutanatha group of temples, Badami's 7th-century Shiva shrines on Agastya Lake, is the best place to end the day.
Best time to go
October to February. Karnataka Tourism gives Hampi temperatures of 15 to 30°C in winter. From March to May, north Karnataka is very hot, and the cave climb and the open ruins become hard by late morning.

Frequently asked questions
Is this a backpacking trip to Hampi?
No. It is a private car tour with hotels and a fixed driver. If you want a budget Hampi backpacking trip with hostels and cycles, this is not it, though we can drop you in Hampi and pick you up later.
Can we climb a hill for sunrise in Hampi?
Yes, a short climb. Karnataka Tourism suggests Matanga Hill for sunrise or sunset over the ruins. Tell us and we start Day 2 before dawn. It is a steep rock climb, so skip it if you have knee trouble. Access depends on the authorities and the weather on the day; if it is closed, we swap in another viewpoint.
Is four days enough?
It covers the main sights, but Day 1 and the return are long drive days. If you want a slower pace, try our 5-day version with Chitradurga Fort.
Do we need a guide?
Not required, but helpful at Hampi and Pattadakal. Guides are paid directly at the sites.
How do payment and cancellation work?
A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.
Who is this package not for?
If you only want Hampi, the 3-day Hampi package is shorter. Travellers who cannot climb steps may struggle at the Badami caves. For a cooler, greener Karnataka break, try the Sakleshpur hills in 3 days.
