Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Chitradurga Fort

The longest outbound day, about 550 km through Bangalore. If we leave before dawn you reach Chitradurga by mid-afternoon for a first walk around the fort. Karnataka Tourism describes Chitradurga Fort as seven concentric stone walls with 19 gateways, the fort Onake Obavva defended with a pestle. Night in Chitradurga. Fort timings change, so your driver checks the closing time on the day.

  2. Day 2: Chitradurga to Hampi, Virupaksha and Vittala

About 3 hours to Hampi. You start at the Virupaksha temple, still an active Shiva shrine with a gopuram close to 50 metres tall, then go on to the Vittala temple, its musical pillars and the stone chariot shown on the ₹50 note. Night in Hampi.

  3. Day 3: The royal centre and Hemakuta Hill

This day covers the royal side of Hampi: the Elephant Stables (eleven domed chambers), the Lotus Mahal and the Royal Enclosure. You finish with sunset on Hemakuta Hill among its small early Vijayanagara temples. All of this is listed on Karnataka Tourism's Hampi page. Night in Hampi.

  4. Day 4: Hampi to Badami, Pattadakal and Aihole

Badami is about 140 km from Hampi, roughly 3 hours. You climb to the four rock-cut cave temples in the red sandstone above Agastya Lake, then drive 22 km to Pattadakal and on to Aihole, which Karnataka Tourism notes has over 125 temples. Night in Badami.

  5. Day 5: Return to Coimbatore

Read this before you book. Karnataka Tourism puts Badami about 450 km from Bangalore, and Coimbatore is roughly another 365 km. That is about 780 km in one day, which our drivers would cover in around 13 to 14 hours. We strongly suggest adding a night on the way home, in Chitradurga or Bangalore, and we price it for you if you want it.

How far and how to reach

Everything is by road in one vehicle. Day 1 (about 550 km) and Day 5 (about 780 km) are the long ones; the days in between are short drives of 2 to 3 hours. All our trips start and end in Coimbatore.

Places you will see

The two towns belong to different empires. Hampi was the capital of Vijayanagara, and UNESCO listed its monuments in 1986. Badami, Aihole and Pattadakal are earlier Chalukya sites; Pattadakal is the UNESCO-listed one, where Chalukya kings held their coronations. One trip lets you compare the 6th-century cave carvings with the 14th to 16th-century city.

Best time to go

Karnataka Tourism recommends October to March for Hampi and October to February for Badami. From April to June the rocks get very hot by late morning, so we start sightseeing at 7 am and rest after lunch.

Frequently asked questions

What is the full Hampi Badami tour itinerary?

Day 1 Chitradurga Fort, Day 2 Virupaksha and Vittala, Day 3 the royal centre and Hemakuta sunset, Day 4 Badami caves, Pattadakal and Aihole, Day 5 the drive back. We recommend splitting the drive home with an extra night.

Is a guide included?

No. Your driver knows the routes and parking, not the history. Government-approved guides work at the Hampi monuments; we can tell you where to find one and you pay them directly, and fees vary by guide.

Can we change the plan?

Yes. People often drop Chitradurga to get a third Hampi day, or add Anegundi across the river. Tell us before you confirm, as the hotel nights change.

How much walking is involved?

A lot. Hampi sites are spread out, Badami cave 2 alone is sixty steps above cave 1, and Hemakuta Hill is a climb on rock. Bring good shoes and water. Seniors may prefer fewer stops per day.

What are the payment and cancellation terms?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.

Who should pick a different package?

If you only have 3 days, the Hampi heritage tour skips Badami. Without Chitradurga, see the 4-day Hampi-Badami circuit. For a full state loop, the 12-day Karnataka tour includes Hampi. For Hoysala temples instead, see our Belur, Halebidu and Shravanabelagola tour.
