Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1: Coimbatore to Kumbakonam; Suryanar Kovil, Kanjanur and Thirunageswaram
We leave Coimbatore early for Kumbakonam, about 310 km by road, around 6 to 7 hours with stops. Most of these temples close in the early afternoon and reopen in the evening, and timings differ by temple, so we aim to reach the area for the evening opening. Pilgrims usually start the circuit with the Sun temple at Suryanar Kovil; Kanjanur and Thirunageswaram are close by, so all three fit into one evening.
Day 2: Thingalur, Alangudi, Thirunallar, Keezhperumpallam and Thiruvenkadu
The longest temple day. Thingalur and Alangudi come first in the morning. Then east to Thirunallar, the Saturn temple, which the Karaikal district page places 5 km west of Karaikal town. In the afternoon you reach the coast near Poompuhar for Keezhperumpallam (Ketu) and Thiruvenkadu (Mercury); the Mayiladuthurai district page puts them 3 km and 8 km from Poompuhar. Back to Kumbakonam for the night.
Day 3: Vaitheeswaran Koil, optional Swamimalai and return to Coimbatore
Morning darshan at Vaitheeswaran Koil, the Mars temple, 12 km from Mayiladuthurai per the district page. If you have time, stop at Swamimalai, one of the six abodes of Murugan, on the way back west. Then the drive to Coimbatore, arriving late evening, depending on traffic and how long you stay at each temple.
How far / how to reach
Kumbakonam is about 310 km from Coimbatore by road. We drive you there and back, and the driver handles the short hops between temples, which are spread over Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai and Karaikal.
Best time to go
The temples are open all year. October to February is the most comfortable weather for long days in the delta. The North-East monsoon (roughly October to December) can bring heavy rain to this coast. Avoid Saturn transit days and major festivals at Thirunallar if you dislike long queues.
Vehicle for your group size
The vehicle is part of the package price. We match it to your group, and you can ask for a different one.

Temples you will visit
Rahu and Ketu. Many visitors expect one shrine for Rahu and Ketu. Rahu is worshipped at Thirunageswaram, close to Kumbakonam town. Ketu is at Keezhperumpallam on the coast. They are in different places, so this plan covers them on different days.
Budhan (Mercury) at Thiruvenkadu. The Mercury shrine is inside the Swetharanyeswarar temple at Thiruvenkadu, near Poompuhar, not in Kumbakonam itself. The Mayiladuthurai district page says devotees come every day.
Alangudi. The Jupiter (Guru) temple at Alangudi is one of the busiest on Thursdays.
Thirunallar. The Karaikal district page notes that crowds rise sharply when Saturn changes signs. If your dates fall near a Sani peyarchi, tell us early.

Frequently asked questions
How are the nine temples grouped over the three days?
Group them by area: the Sun, Venus and Rahu temples near Kumbakonam on one evening; Moon, Jupiter, Saturn, Ketu and Mercury on the second day; Mars at Vaitheeswaran Koil on the way out. That is the order this package follows, and it keeps the driving short between darshan sessions.
Can we add Darasuram Airavateswarar temple?
Yes. The Thanjavur district page describes this 12th-century Chola temple as a UNESCO World Heritage monument. Darasuram is just outside Kumbakonam, so it fits on Day 1 or Day 3. We check Darasuram temple timings for your date before planning it in.
Can we also visit the Sarangapani temple in Kumbakonam?
Kumbakonam town has several big temples, including the Sarangapani Perumal temple. Ask, and we add one on Day 3 if the timings allow.
Can senior citizens do this trip?
Yes, the walking inside most temples is on flat ground. Tell us about anyone who needs a wheelchair or slow walking, and the driver will stop close to each entrance where parking rules allow.
Who should pick a different package?
If you want the big Chola temples and Thanjavur palace more than the planet temples, take our Thanjavur and Kumbakonam 3-day trip. For the Murugan temples, see the Arupadai Veedu tour. For a longer temple and heritage circuit, there is a 5-day Kumbakonam and Chettinad trip. For Velankanni and Nagore on the nearby coast, see the Velankanni and Nagore 3-day trip. For heritage mansions and Chettinad food, see Chettinad in two days.
How do we pay, and what if we cancel?
A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.
