Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Shivamogga, Sakrebyle

    Shivamogga is a long drive, roughly 475 km, around 9 to 10 hours with stops. The standard plan puts Sakrebyle on arrival, but the elephant activities there happen in the morning, so on most trips we move Sakrebyle to Day 3 and you simply check in tonight. Night in Shivamogga.

  2. Day 2: Jog Falls and Ikkeri Aghoreshwara temple

    Jog Falls is about 133 km from Shivamogga, 2.5 to 3 hours each way. Karnataka Tourism says the Sharavathi drops 253 metres there in four streams, and calls it India's second-highest plunge waterfall. It lists the viewpoints open 7:30 am to 9:30 pm. On the way back you stop at Ikkeri, near Sagara, for the Aghoreshwara temple built by the Keladi Nayakas. Night in Shivamogga.

  3. Day 3: Sakrebyle, Mandagadde, Gajanur Dam, return

    Morning at the Sakrebyle elephant camp, a forest department camp 14 km out on the Thirthahalli road. Gajanur Dam on the Tunga is close by, and Mandagadde bird sanctuary is further along the same road. Then the drive home to Coimbatore, about 475 km. It is a long day of around 9 to 10 hours, and we can add an extra night on the way on request. We drop you at your pickup point.

How far and how to reach

Everything is by road in one vehicle. Day 1 and Day 3 are long drives, and Day 2 has about 265 km of return driving to Jog and back.

Sights on this trip

Jog is the reason most people come, and the falls change completely with the season. The other stops on this plan are quieter. Sakrebyle is a training camp for captive elephants. Mandagadde is a river island where, Karnataka Tourism says, more than 5,000 birds arrive between July and September. Ikkeri is the temple most visitors ask about, and the Keladi temple nearby is an easy add-on. The Shivamogga district page lists more places to visit in Shimoga if you want to extend.

Best time to go

For the falls, Karnataka Tourism recommends August to December, and October to December when all four streams run full and the gorge is not hidden in cloud. In the heaviest rain the gorge can be lost in cloud. Mandagadde birds are there mainly from July to September. In summer (March to May) Jog can shrink to thin threads.

What is the Jog Falls height?

Karnataka Tourism gives the Jog Falls height as 253 metres (830 feet), a single drop by the Sharavathi river split into four streams. That is why it is called India's second-highest plunge waterfall.

Can we walk down to the bottom of Jog Falls?

There is a long flight of steps from the viewpoint down towards the base. Whether it is open depends on the season and safety rules, and it is a hard climb back up.

Can we add the Kodachadri trek or Keladi?

Keladi fits on Day 2 with Ikkeri. The Kodachadri trek needs a separate day, and entry and jeep rules are set by the forest department on the day, so it means an extra night.

Can we change the plan?

Yes. Some people swap Mandagadde for more time at Jog, or add a night near Sagara. Ask before you confirm.

What are the payment and cancellation terms?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.

Who should pick a different package?
