Ooty family tour packages for 3 days: the day plan

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Ooty, Ooty Lake, Thread Garden and Botanical Garden

    Pickup in Coimbatore and the ghat drive up through Mettupalayam, about 100 km and about 3 hours. Children like the boats on Ooty Lake and the Thread Garden next to it. End at the Government Botanical Garden, 55 acres of lawns where kids can run, with a fossilised tree trunk that the district guide says is 20 million years old.

  2. Day 2: Optional toy train, Sim's Park, a tea factory and Dolphin's Nose

    If you want the toy train, the driver drops you at the station and meets you in Coonoor with the vehicle. Tickets are not included and sell out, so tell us early and book them on IRCTC. In Coonoor, see Sim's Park, a 12-hectare garden opened in 1874, and a tea factory where you can watch leaf being processed. Dolphin's Nose is about 12 km from Coonoor bus stand and looks out to St. Catherine's Falls. Back to Ooty for the night.

  3. Day 3: Doddabetta, Rose Garden, Pykara Lake, Shooting Point and return

    Start at Doddabetta, at 2,623 m the highest peak in Tamil Nadu, about 10 km from Ooty. Then the Rose Garden, and west on the Mysore road to Pykara Lake and Shooting Point. This is a full day, and you reach Coimbatore in the evening.

How far / how to reach

About 100 km from Coimbatore, roughly 3 hours by road via Mettupalayam. We drive you both ways. Families arriving by train or flight are met at Coimbatore station or airport.

Places to visit in Ooty with family

Among the things to do in Ooty with family, every stop on this plan works for a mixed age group. The gardens are mostly flat, and we plan toilet and rest breaks into the day. Doddabetta has a short slope from the parking to the viewpoint. Other activities, like horse rides near the lake, are paid on the spot.

There are few places to visit in Ooty at night with family: the parks close by evening, so plan dinner in town and an early night.

Best time to visit Ooty with family

The Nilgiris district names April, May and September as the best months for the Botanical Garden. April and May match school holidays, so expect crowds and higher hotel rates, and the flower show in May is the busiest week. The worst time to visit Ooty with family is June to August, when rain fogs over viewpoints and boating can stop. December and January nights are cold for small children.

We book a 3-star or similar hotel and confirm the name in your quote. Tell us how many adults and children are coming so we ask for family rooms or extra beds, and your quote states what is available. If you would rather stay at a resort with a lawn or play area, ask and we will check the options and cost for your dates.

Can you quote two rooms with one vehicle?

Yes. List everyone travelling and we price all the rooms and one vehicle for the group on one quote.

Is the toy train included?

No. It is optional and the tickets sell out, especially in April and May. If you do not get seats, the driver takes you to Coonoor by road and the day runs as planned.

Can we do this in 2 days?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.
