It suits couples, small friends’ groups and photographers who are happy with a simple stay and patchy phone signal. Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Meghamalai, tea estates and Highwavys Dam

    Leave Coimbatore early and drive towards Theni, then up the Meghamalai ghat through the forest checkpost. Checkpost timings can change, so we plan the climb in daylight. After check-in, drive through the tea estates to Highwavys Dam for the evening. Overnight in Meghamalai.

  2. Day 2: Manalar Dam, Maharaja Mettu and forest viewpoints

    Spend the day on the estate roads: Manalar Dam in the morning, then Maharaja Mettu and the forest viewpoints, subject to access on the day. Entry depends on the forest department and the estates; if a stop is closed, we swap in another stop nearby. Second night in Meghamalai.

  3. Day 3: Suruli Falls and return to Coimbatore

    Drive down after breakfast to Suruli Falls near Cumbum, then head home to Coimbatore.

How far / how to reach

Meghamalai is about 270 km from Coimbatore by road via Theni, around 6 to 7 hours including the ghat. The last stretch is slow. Plan to arrive before dark. See more on our Meghamalai page and the Tamil Nadu packages list.

Places you will see

Locals named Meghamalai for the clouds that cover its peak. The Theni district's Meghamalai page puts it at about 1,500 metres, notes that the British called it the High Wavy Mountain, which is where the name Highwavys comes from, and gives the distance from Theni as 50 km.

Suruli Falls is a two-stage waterfall fed by the Suruli river, which starts in the Meghamalai range. The district's Suruli Falls page places it 56 km from Theni and 10 km from Cumbum, which is why it fits on the way down on Day 3.

If water levels are good, we can also stop at Chinna Suruli, the Cloud Land Falls near Kombaithozhu, which the district lists as 54 km from Theni, if time allows.

Meghamalai is inside a forest area with wildlife on the roads at dusk, so we do not drive the estate roads after dark.

Best time to go

September to February usually has the clearest views and running falls. Heavy rain can damage the estate roads, and the forest department may close access, in which case we swap in another stop nearby. Summer is the warmest but the hills stay pleasant.

From ₹10,900 per person. Your quote depends on dates, the stay and group size. Couples travel in a sedan, but for the estate roads we often suggest an Innova or Xylo for clearance. Groups travel in a Tempo Traveller if the stay can take one. Some forest roads allow only local vehicles; if that applies on your date, we explain how that stretch works in your quote. The vehicle is named in your quote.

Is there phone signal and internet in Meghamalai?

It is patchy. Download maps and tell family you may be out of reach for parts of the day.

Are meals available at the stay?

Most stays serve simple meals, and there are few restaurants on the hill. Meals are not in our price; we confirm options with your stay when we quote.

Can we change the plan?

Yes. If a road is closed, we swap in another viewpoint or more time at Suruli Falls. Tell us before booking if you want a slower Day 2.

Who is this package not for?

People who want shopping, boating and resorts with activities. For a fuller hill holiday, the Kodaikanal weekend suits better, and for tea estates closer to home, the Valparai day trip. For another 3-day break, there is a Pollachi, Topslip and Valparai trip through forest and tea country, or a Nilgiris birding and photography trip.

What are the payment and cancellation terms?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.
