Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Kotagiri, Kodanad and Catherine Falls

    Your driver collects you in Coimbatore and takes the Kotagiri ghat road from Mettupalayam, which is quieter than the Coonoor road. After check-in, drive out to Kodanad on the eastern edge of the hills, then stop at the falls on the way back. Overnight in Kotagiri.

  2. Day 2: Longwood Shola, Elk Falls and a tea estate

    Day 2 stays close to town: a walk in Longwood Shola reserve forest, Elk Falls and a tea estate visit, depending on which estates accept visitors that day. The afternoon is kept free for small viewpoints, so nobody spends the day in the car.

  3. Day 3: Coonoor and return to Coimbatore

    Check out and drive to Coonoor for Sim's Park, then Lamb's Rock and Dolphin's Nose, which sit on the same road. Drive down via Mettupalayam for your drop.

How far is it from Coimbatore

Kotagiri is about 70 km from Coimbatore through Mettupalayam, roughly 2 to 2.5 hours with the ghat section. The district lists Coimbatore as the nearest airport, so you can start straight from the airport. More Nilgiris trips are on our Kotagiri page and the Tamil Nadu packages list.

Places you will see

Kodanad View Point is the Kotagiri view point most visitors come for: a railing at the edge of the plateau with the plains far below.

Catherine Falls is a two-stage waterfall on the Kotagiri side of the valley. The Nilgiris District Administration notes that you can also see the falls from Dolphin's Nose, so on Day 3 you look at them again from across the valley, if the mist allows.

Longwood Shola is native shola forest near town. Kalpavriksh records it as a 116-hectare reserved forest, and the forest department controls entry, so if it is closed on your day, we swap in another stop nearby.

Sim's Park is a 12-hectare botanical garden opened in 1874, and it hosts the annual fruit and vegetable show. The district's Lamb's Rock page places it about 8 km from Coonoor, on the way to Dolphin's Nose, with a sheer drop and a view of the Coimbatore plains. Most visitors come for the photos from that edge.

Best time to go

Kotagiri is pleasant most of the year. Dry months give the clearest views. In the monsoon the falls run fuller, but mist can hide viewpoints for hours. If views matter most, we move those stops to the day with the better forecast.

Frequently asked questions

Can we ride the Nilgiri Mountain Railway toy train on this trip?

Yes, if you get seats. The Nilgiri train runs from Mettupalayam to Ooty through Coonoor. For Nilgiri toy train booking, go through Indian Railways; seats sell out in season, so check current timings and booking on the Indian Railways site before you book. Send us your train times and your driver will meet you at Coonoor station.

Is the Coonoor toy train included in the price?

No. The Coonoor toy train is a railway ticket you book yourself. With tickets for the Mettupalayam to Coonoor section, your driver drops you at Mettupalayam and meets you at Coonoor.

Is Dolphin's Nose worth the drive?

Yes. It is on Day 3, on the same road as the other Coonoor viewpoints, so there is no doubling back. The district puts it about 12 km from Coonoor bus stand. Expect a short walk from the parking area.

Can we change the plan or add Ooty?

Yes, before you confirm. Adding Ooty usually means adding a night. If Ooty is the main goal, our Ooty and Coonoor trip with Ooty stays suits you better.

Who is this package not for?

People who want shopping, boating and big gardens. Kotagiri hill station is quiet and evenings end early. Birders and photographers may prefer our Nilgiris birding and photography trip, and wildlife fans can look at Masinagudi and Mudumalai in 2 days. With only one day, the Coonoor day trip covers the viewpoints without a hotel.

What are the payment and cancellation terms?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.
