Places to visit in Kabini
The main things to do in Kabini are a boat cruise on the Kabini backwaters, a jeep safari in Nagarhole and a nature walk. The Kabini reservoir separates Nagarhole from Bandipur National Park, so the backwaters draw elephants to the water.
- Kabini backwaters. The Kabini dam creates a large reservoir near Sargur. In summer the water level falls and leaves grassy meadows that attract wildlife, per the Kabini River Wikipedia entry.
- Boat safari. On the Kabini river, either by motorboat or by traditional coracle, in the morning or evening. Crocodiles, birds and elephants coming down to the water are the usual sights.
- Jeep safari in Nagarhole. Led by naturalists. Nagarhole covers 847.98 sq km, became a national park in 1983 and was declared India's 37th tiger reserve in 2003.
- Nature walks. Guided walks on flora, birds and animal tracks, offered by lodges such as Jungle Lodges.
What is Kabini famous for?
Kabini is famous for wildlife viewing on the river's edge, especially elephants. Jungle Lodges says March to May is the peak, when forest pools dry up and animals come to the river, producing what it calls the largest gathering of Asiatic elephants in the wild. Tigers and leopards are seen only occasionally.
Other animals listed by Jungle Lodges include gaur, sambar and spotted deer, wild boar, sloth bear and crocodiles. Sightings are never guaranteed, so treat any safari as a chance, not a promise. Mobile phones are not allowed on Jungle Lodges safaris.
Kabini trip plan: 2 or 3 days?
Two days is enough for one boat cruise and one morning safari. Three days lets you add Mysore, which is on the way back. The 3-day Kabini Mysore package adds the palace city.
| Package | Length | From (per person) |
|---|---|---|
| Kabini 2 days | 2 days, 1 night | ₹8,000 |
| Kabini Mysore 3 days | 3 days, 2 nights | ₹12,800 |
The Kabini 2-day tour package is a wildlife weekend: river cruise on day 1 and a Nagarhole safari on day 2. The Kabini Mysore 3-day package is better for families who also want sightseeing. Safaris inside Nagarhole are run by the Karnataka Forest Department, and seats are limited; we book once your dates are fixed, when available.
How much does a Kabini tour package cost?
Our Kabini tour packages start at ₹8,000 per person for 2 days and 1 night, and ₹12,800 for 3 days and 2 nights with Mysore. One price covers the AC vehicle, driver, fuel, toll, parking, the Karnataka permit and entry tax, and the stay. Meals, safari and entry tickets and personal expenses are extra.
The cost depends on the resort category, group size and the dates; weekends and holidays cost more. The 3-day package shows a price range, so your quote fixes the exact figure.
Best time to visit Kabini
March to May gives the best chance of seeing animals at the river, because the forest dries out. October to February is cooler and greener. July to September is the monsoon: the forest is lush, but Jungle Lodges says sightings are fewer. Book early for school holidays.
| Months | What to expect |
|---|---|
| March to May | Peak for sightings, hot by midday. Elephants gather at the water. |
| June to September | Monsoon. Lush forest, fewer animals seen. |
| October to February | Cooler and green. A fair chance of animals and birds. |
