Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Gokarna, Om Beach and Kudle Beach sunset

Gokarna is about 675 km from Coimbatore, a very long day on the road. We leave before dawn to reach the coast by late afternoon. If the road is slow, the beaches move to the next morning. Om Beach is named for its shape, which looks like the Om symbol from above, according to Karnataka Tourism's Om Beach page. Watch the sunset from Kudle, a short walk south of town.

  2. Day 2: Mahabaleshwar Temple, Gokarna town and the beach trek

Morning darshan at the Mahabaleshwar Temple. Karnataka Tourism's Gokarna page lists hours of 6.00 am to 12.30 pm and 5.00 to 8.00 pm and a strict dress code: dhoti for men, bare-chested inside, and saree or salwar for women. Walk the temple street, then start the trek south to Half Moon Beach and Paradise Beach. Boats can bring you back if your legs are done.

  3. Day 3: Mirjan Fort or Murudeshwar, then the return journey

Pick one. Mirjan Fort is a laterite fort on the highway north toward Kumta; the Uttara Kannada district page puts it 12 km from Kumta. Murudeshwar is about 80 km south, on the way home. Then the drive back to Coimbatore, about 675 km and 13 hours or more with stops, ending at your pickup point.

This is a long day, and leaving after a morning stop means reaching Coimbatore late at night. An extra night on the way can be added on request if you want an earlier finish.

How far / how to reach

About 675 km from Coimbatore by road. The nearest airports are Goa (Dabolim) and Mangaluru, according to Karnataka Tourism. If you prefer to fly or take a train part of the way and meet our vehicle, ask us. The Karnataka vehicle permit and entry tax are included in the price. Your written quote states exactly what else is included, including any extra kilometres.

Places you will see

Om Beach. Golden sand, rocky coves and beach shacks. The Om Beach distance from Gokarna town is about 6 km by road, according to Karnataka Tourism.

Kudle Beach. The closest of the trek beaches to town and the easiest sunset spot.

Mahabaleshwar Temple. Home of the Atmalinga of Shiva, linked to the Ravana legend.

Mirjan Fort. The best-known fort near Gokarna, built of local red laterite.

Best time to go

Karnataka Tourism names October to February as peak season, with calm seas. March to May is hot and humid. In the June to September monsoon the sea is rough and the trek paths get slippery. Gokarna New Year week is very crowded and stays sell out early, so book well ahead if your dates fall then.

Vehicle for your group size

The vehicle is part of the package price. We match it to your group, and you can ask for a different one.

Gokarna beach trek: what to expect

The Karnataka Tourism Gokarna beaches guide describes the full trek as about 10 to 14 km, 4 to 7 hours, moderate, over rocky cliffs. It suggests starting around 6.30 am to avoid the midday heat, sticking to marked trails, and not walking through the jungle after sunset. Half Moon Beach is about a 30-minute walk from the Om side; Paradise Beach is about 20 minutes further. Boats run from Om and Paradise if you want to skip a section.

We do not plan a night at Paradise Beach, for the same safety reason.

Frequently asked questions

Can we do Gokarna in two days from Coimbatore?

Not well. A Gokarna trip plan for 2 days would be almost all driving. The Gokarna 2 days trip cost looks lower on paper, but from Coimbatore you would see one beach. Three days is the shortest plan we run.

Is this trip good for families?

Yes. As a Gokarna family package it works for families who can walk on uneven rock. Om and Kudle are easy to reach by road. The full trek is not suitable for small children or anyone with knee trouble; take the boat between beaches instead.

Can we visit Nirvana Beach?

It is not in the plan. Karnataka Tourism describes it as about 10 km away by ferry. Ask and we can try to fit it into Day 2 instead of part of the trek.

How far is Kudle Beach from the town?

Karnataka Tourism puts it about a 10-minute walk south of town. Your driver can drop you closer by road.

Who should pick a different package?

If you want temples more than beaches, see our Udupi and Murudeshwar 3-day trip or the Karnataka temples tour. For river rafting as well, take the Gokarna and Dandeli 5-day circuit. To add Udupi and Mangalore, see Mangalore, Udupi and Murudeshwar in 4 days. With a spare day, Gokarna and Murudeshwar in 4 days is less rushed.

How do we pay, and what if we cancel?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.
