Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Kozhikode, Kappad Beach, Kozhikode Beach street food

We leave in the morning and reach Kozhikode by early afternoon. After check-in, a drive north to Kappad Beach, then back to Kozhikode Beach for sunset and the evening food stalls. Night in Kozhikode.

  2. Day 2: Beypore uru yard, Mananchira Square, Mittai Theruvu

Morning at Beypore, where the river meets the sea and shipwrights still build the wooden urus. Afternoon in town around Mananchira Square, then an evening walk down Mittai Theruvu for halwa and banana chips. Night in Kozhikode.

  3. Day 3: Kakkayam Dam, Pazhassi Raja Museum, return to Coimbatore

An early start inland to Kakkayam dam in the forest, back via the Pazhassi Raja Museum at East Hill, then the drive home. The museum is closed on Mondays, so Day 3 should not fall on a Monday. Entry at Kakkayam depends on the forest department on the day; if it is closed, we swap in another stop nearby. The early start leaves room for both stops and the drive home.

How far is it from Coimbatore?

Kozhikode is roughly 180 km from Coimbatore through Palakkad and Perinthalmanna, about 4 to 5 hours. Kakkayam is further inland, so the Day 3 return, after the dam and the museum, takes around 4 to 5 hours with stops.

Places you will see and what you will eat

Kozhikode Beach. The Kozhikode district page on the beach calls it the spot for watching the sunset, with old piers, an old lighthouse and seafood such as kallummakkaya (mussels). Evenings are when the stalls fill up.

Kappad Beach. Vasco da Gama landed here in 1498, opening the sea route from Europe to India, as the Incredible India page on Kappad Beach notes. A stone memorial marks the spot.

Beypore and the uru. Beypore, about 10 km south of Kozhikode at the mouth of the Chaliyar, has built wooden urus (dhows) for centuries. A large uru takes a team years to build, with no drawings, according to Kerala Tourism's Beypore page. Few full-size urus are built now, so what you see on the day varies.

Mananchira Square and Mittai Theruvu. The old town square and, close by, the street known for Kozhikode halwa. Sweets travel well, so this is where most people shop.

Kakkayam Dam. A dam on the edge of the Malabar Wildlife Sanctuary, inland from Kozhikode. See Kerala Tourism's Kakkayam page.

Pazhassi Raja Museum. At East Hill, with mural paintings, bronzes, old coins and megalithic finds, plus an art gallery of Raja Ravi Varma paintings. Open 9 am to 4.30 pm with a lunch break, closed Mondays, per the Kozhikode district museum page.

Best time to go

October to March is the best season for the beaches, with dry evenings for street food. If your dates fall in Ramadan, tell us, because evening food timings change and we plan the walk around them. The monsoon brings heavy rain and rough sea from June to August.

Vehicle for your group size

The vehicle is part of the package price. We match it to your group, and you can ask for a different one.

Frequently asked questions

Are meals included in a food tour?

No. You choose where and what to eat, and pay as you go. The package covers the vehicle, driver, hotel and the route that puts you at the right street at the right time. Your quote spells out what is in and out.

Do you arrange a guide for the food walk?

Our driver knows the main food streets, but we do not include a food guide.

Can we add Wayanad?

Yes. Wayanad is up the ghat from Kozhikode, so one or two extra nights there make a good hill-and-coast trip. See our Wayanad trips.

Who is this package not for?

If you want forts and a beach drive, the Wayanad, Kannur and Bekal 5-day trip suits you better. If you do not enjoy busy city streets, pick a hill station instead, such as our 3-day Nelliyampathy trip.

How do we pay, and what if we cancel?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.
