Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Bandipur, jungle jeep safari

    We drive to Bandipur, about 230 km and around 5 to 6 hours with stops, and check in by lunch. Safari slots and timings change by season, so we check them for your travel date and book the afternoon slot that fits. We add a visit to a forest elephant camp on the route only when the forest department allows visitors that day.

  2. Day 2: Bandipur to Ooty via Kalhatty, lake and Botanical Garden

    The climb to Ooty goes up the Kalhatty ghat with its hairpin bends. Some ghat roads limit which vehicles may use them; if that applies on your date, we explain how that stretch works in your quote. After check-in you visit Ooty Lake and the Government Botanical Garden.

  3. Day 3: Coonoor, Sim's Park, Dolphin's Nose, return to Coimbatore

    Drive down to Coonoor past tea estates for Sim's Park and Dolphin's Nose, then down the ghat to Mettupalayam and home.

How far / how to reach

All by road from Coimbatore. The return takes the hairpin bends between Coonoor and Mettupalayam. Night traffic through Bandipur is restricted, so we plan arrival in daylight.

Places you will see

Bandipur National Park is located in Chamarajanagar and Mysuru districts of Karnataka, on the Mysore to Ooty highway, and covers 872 sq km, per Karnataka Tourism's Bandipur page. It joins Mudumalai to the south and Nagarhole to the north-west. On the same page, Bandipur National Park tickets for the jeep safari are ₹3,000 per person (run only by Jungle Lodges and Resorts), and the forest department mini-bus ticket is ₹350. Elephant safaris have stopped.

Ooty Lake is a 65-acre lake made in 1824 by John Sullivan, then Collector of Coimbatore, according to the Nilgiris district page. There is a boat house, a mini train and an amusement park in Ooty beside the lake. The Botanical Garden covers 55 acres.

On Day 3 you see the two sights most Ooty and Coonoor trips pair: Sim's Park, a 12-hectare garden laid out on the hill slope (district page), and Dolphin's Nose. Dolphin's Nose is near Coonoor, not Ooty, about 12 km from Coonoor bus stand, with a view of Catherine Falls, per the Dolphin's Nose page. You pass tea garden slopes on the way.

Best time to go

October to May suits both halves of the trip. The forest is greener after the monsoon; animals are easier to spot near water from March. Ooty is cold from December to February, so pack warm clothes.

Frequently asked questions

What if the safari is full?

Safari seats are run by the forest department and Jungle Lodges and sell out, especially at weekends. We book them when available. If they are full, the mini-bus safari is the fallback.

Can we take the Ooty to Coonoor train on Day 3?

Yes, if seats are free. You ride the toy train from Ooty and our car meets you at Coonoor. Toy train tickets are booked online through Indian Railways and are not in our quote. Check current timings and fares on the Indian Railways site before you book.

Is Dolphin's Nose in Ooty or Coonoor?

Coonoor. It is in the same district, so most people include it in an Ooty trip.

What are the payment and cancellation terms?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.
