How far and how to reach

Coimbatore to Kumbakonam is a full day's drive east through Karur, Tiruchirappalli and Thanjavur, about 300 km and around 6 to 7 hours with stops. Kumbakonam to Karaikudi is a shorter run south, about 130 km. Day 5 is Karaikudi back to Coimbatore, around 4.5 to 5.5 hours with stops. Because the same vehicle stays with you, you do not need a separate car rental in Kumbakonam or Karaikudi.

Places you will see

The temple at Darasuram is the Airavateswarar Temple, built by Raja Raja Chola II in the 12th century, according to the Thanjavur district page on Darasuram. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Monument and is known for the miniature sculptures on its front pillars. Darasuram village is also a silk weaving centre.

Swamimalai, the Kumbakonam Murugan temple, is one of the six abodes (Arupadai Veedu) of Lord Murugan, per the Thanjavur district Swamimalai page, so most pilgrims add it to a Kumbakonam trip. The village is also known for bronze idols. Uppiliappan Temple is one of the 108 Divya Desam in Kumbakonam and the villages around it, and it stands in Thirunageswaram, the same village as the Rahu temple.

In Chettinad, the Sivaganga district places of interest page says the Chettinad Palace was built by Dr Annamalai Chettiyar, founder of Indian Bank, and completed in 1912. It notes the large Chettinad-style houses of Kanadukathan and the handmade tiles of Athangudi, made only there.

Best time to go

November to February is the most comfortable; days are warm but not harsh. March to June is hot in the delta and in Chettinad. Temples get crowded on festival days and Navagraha temples on their planet's day of the week.

Frequently asked questions

Who built Darasuram temple?

Raja Raja Chola II, in the 12th century, according to the Thanjavur district administration. It is one of the Great Living Chola Temples on the UNESCO list, along with the big temples at Thanjavur and Gangaikonda Cholapuram.

Can we add the Rahu temple?

Yes. The Rahu temple in Kumbakonam, at Thirunageswaram, is right by Uppiliappan, so adding it on Day 2 takes little time. You can also ask for the full Navagraha set; our 3-day Navagraha temple circuit covers all nine.

How is this different from a local Kumbakonam tour?

Kumbakonam local tour packages start in the town and cover temples only. This one starts at your door in Coimbatore and adds two days in Chettinad.

Can we visit the inside of a Chettinad mansion?

Some mansions are private homes; others charge entry. We take you to ones open that day, and your driver may change the order to match.

Can we change the plan?

Yes. You can add Gangaikonda Cholapuram or Thanjavur, or drop the antique shopping.

What are your payment and cancellation terms?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.

Who is this not for?

Travellers who want hills or beaches. This trip is temples, old houses and food. For a hill break, try our Yelagiri and Vellore escape. If you have only a weekend, our 2-day Chettinad trip is shorter, and the Chettinad destination page lists every trip there.
