How far and how to reach

The Coimbatore to Coonoor to Ooty distance is about 90 km by the Mettupalayam ghat road, around 3 hours. The Nilgiris district site gives the Mudumalai to Ooty distance as 36 km via Kalhatty and 67 km via Gudalur. Kalhatty is the short, steep route, with hairpin bends and rules on which vehicles may use it and in which direction; if a rule applies on your date, we explain how that stretch works in your quote. The drive from Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta to Ooty is longer, through Bandipur and Mudumalai, and we plan it in daylight because night traffic on forest roads is restricted.

If you fly in, we pick you up at the airport, and the drive from Coimbatore International Airport to Ooty is the first leg of Day 1. Places you will see

The Nilgiris district guide to Mudumalai Tiger Reserve calls it India's first wildlife sanctuary. It covers 321 sq km where Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala meet, and its listed animals include elephants, gaur, tiger, panther and spotted deer. The same page says visitors can take a vehicle ride on the designated visitor route and names Theppakadu Elephant Camp as a popular stop. The Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary is also called a national park, and most trips to it start from Ooty.

Doddabetta, at 2,623 m, is the highest peak in Tamil Nadu and about 10 km from Ooty bus stand, according to the district page on Doddabetta. Pykara and Ooty Lake are on the district's list of Ooty tourist places.

Gopalaswamy Betta is a hilltop temple inside Bandipur in Karnataka. Private cars stop at the foot and visitors go up by the Karnataka state bus. Bus timings and rules change, so we check them for your date, and if the hill is closed we swap in another stop nearby.
