  1. Day 1: Your day

    Morning: Palakkad Fort. Palakkad is about 55 km from Coimbatore, so you reach the fort by mid-morning. It stands in the middle of Palakkad town and is open from 8 am to 6 pm, according to the Palakkad district page on the fort. It is better known locally as Tipu Sultan's Fort.

    Midday: Malampuzha Dam, gardens, ropeway and rock garden. Malampuzha is about 10 km from Palakkad. The Palakkad district gardens page lists the garden hours (10 am to 7.30 pm), a 20-minute ropeway ride over the gardens and dam, and the rock garden half a kilometre away, open 10 am to 6 pm. The ropeway pauses for lunch between 1 pm and 2.30 pm, so we plan around it.

    Afternoon: Kalpathy heritage village. Kalpathy is an old agraharam on the Kalpathy River, about 4 km from the centre of Palakkad. The Incredible India page on Kalpathy calls it the state's first heritage village, with the Viswanatha Swamy Temple at its heart. You walk the single street of old houses, then drive back to Coimbatore by evening and drop you at your pickup point.

Best time to go

October to February is the most comfortable time for walking the fort and Kalpathy. Kalpathy's chariot festival (Ratholsavam) falls in November and draws big crowds. March to May afternoons are hot, so start early.

About the dam

The dam is built across the Malampuzha River, a tributary of the Bharathapuzha, and it supplies irrigation water to Palakkad's paddy fields.

Who should pick a different trip?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.
