Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Munnar

    We drive up through the ghat to Munnar and check in by afternoon. Evening free. Suggested stay: Tea County or a similar 3-star hotel, confirmed in your quote.

  2. Day 2: Munnar sightseeing

    A full day around Munnar's tea estates, dams and viewpoints. The usual stops are Eravikulam National Park and Mattupetty, and we fix the list with you before the trip. Eravikulam closes for part of the year for the Nilgiri tahr calving season, so we check it for your dates.

  3. Day 3: Munnar to Athirapally

    You come down from the hills to Athirapally and see the falls in the afternoon light. Night near the falls. Suggested stay: Rainforest or a similar 3-star hotel, confirmed in your quote.

  4. Day 4: Athirapally to Kumarakom

    A morning drive south to Kumarakom and check-in at a lakeside resort on Vembanad Lake. Afternoon at leisure. Stay: a 3-star or similar hotel, named in your quote.

  5. Day 5: Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary and sunset cruise

    Early morning at the bird sanctuary, when birds are most active. The evening is a boat cruise on the lake at sunset. Night in Kumarakom.

  6. Day 6: Return to Coimbatore

    After breakfast we drive back to Coimbatore for your drop.

How far is it from Coimbatore?

Coimbatore to Munnar is about 160 km, around 5 hours through Pollachi and Udumalpet. The return from Kumarakom is longer, about 230 km, around 5 to 6 hours with stops.

Places you will see

Munnar. The town sits about 1,600 metres up, where three mountain streams meet, according to the Idukki district page on Munnar. The same page lists Eravikulam National Park, home of the Nilgiri tahr, and Mattupetty's dam and lake about 13 km from town. See our Munnar trips for shorter options.

Athirapally Falls. On the Chalakudy River, about 80 feet high and the largest waterfall in Kerala, says the Thrissur district page on Athirappilly. For the falls alone, see Athirapally and Thrissur in 2 days.

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary. A 14-acre sanctuary on the banks of Vembanad Lake. The Kottayam district page on the sanctuary lists 91 local and 50 migratory bird species, and recommends seeing it by boat.

Best time to go

September to March is the most comfortable stretch for the whole route. For birds, the Kottayam district page names June to August for local birds and November to February for migratory birds, so a winter trip gives you both cool Munnar weather and the migrants at Kumarakom. Athirapally is at its fullest in the monsoon, when rain can slow the hill drives.

Can we take a houseboat instead of the Kumarakom resort?

Yes. One of the two Kumarakom nights can be a houseboat night on Vembanad Lake. Tell us when you ask for the quote. If you want two houseboat nights, our Kumarakom backwater weekend can be added after a shorter Munnar trip.

Who should pick a different package?

If you want the Periyar boat ride and spice gardens, choose the Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey 6-day tour. For a shorter run through Athirapally and the backwaters, try Cochin, Athirapally and Alleppey in 4 days.

What if Eravikulam is closed on our dates?

The park closes for a few weeks each year for the tahr calving season. On those dates we replace it with other Munnar stops such as Mattupetty or the tea museum.

How do we pay, and what if we cancel?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.
