Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Wayanad

    A full travel day up into the hills. Check in and rest. Suggested stay: a 3-star hotel in the Vythiri area, confirmed in your quote.

  2. Day 2: Wayanad sightseeing

    A full day of Wayanad sights, picked with you before the trip. One common choice is Banasura Sagar, which the Wayanad district page on Banasura Sagar Dam describes as India's largest earth dam. Night in Wayanad.

  3. Day 3: Wayanad to Kannur, Muzhappilangad beach, St. Angelo Fort

    You come down the ghat to the coast. At Muzhappilangad you can drive along the sand itself, then visit St. Angelo Fort by the sea. Night in Kannur. Suggested stay: Malabar Beach Resort or a similar 3-star hotel, confirmed in your quote.

  4. Day 4: Kannur to Bekal Fort and backwaters

    A morning drive north to Bekal. You walk the fort walls above the sea, then spend the evening by the backwaters. Night in Bekal. Suggested stay: a 3-star or similar hotel, named in your quote.

  5. Day 5: Nileshwaram cruise, return to Coimbatore

    A morning backwater cruise around Nileshwaram, then the long drive home to Coimbatore. Expect a late arrival; if you would rather not, ask us to add a night on the way.

How far is it from Coimbatore?

Coimbatore to Wayanad is a hill drive of about 215 km, around 4.5 to 5.5 hours with stops. The coast legs are shorter: Kannur to Bekal is about 2 hours. The return from Nileshwaram to Coimbatore is the longest leg, about 325 km, around 7 to 8 hours with stops.

Places you will see

Muzhappilangad Drive-in Beach. The Kannur district page on Muzhappilangad calls it Kerala's only drive-in beach: a 4 km stretch about 7 km from Thalassery that you can drive along.

St. Angelo Fort. Built in 1505 by Don Francisco de Almeida, the first Portuguese Viceroy, about 3 km from Kannur town. It is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, according to the Kannur district page on Kannur Fort.

Bekal Fort. The largest fort in Kerala, spread over 40 acres at Pallikere, about 12 km from Kasaragod, according to the Kasaragod district page on Bekal Fort.

Nileshwaram backwaters. The cruise runs around the Valiyaparamba backwaters, an island fishing village between the backwater and the Arabian Sea, about 30 km from Bekal. See the Kasaragod district page on Valiyaparamba.

Best time to go

October to March is the best window: the coast is dry, the sea is calm for the fort walks and the backwater cruise, and Wayanad is cool. Avoid the peak monsoon, June to August, when heavy rain can close the beach drive and slow the Wayanad ghat roads.

Can we drive our vehicle onto Muzhappilangad beach?

Our driver takes the vehicle onto the beach when the local authorities allow it and the sand is firm. On days when driving is stopped, you walk the beach instead. Beach driving rules can change, and we tell you the position on your dates.

Can we skip the long drive on the last day?

Yes. We can add a night in Kannur or Kozhikode on the way back and split the drive over two days. That adds one hotel night to the quote.

Who is this package not for?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.
