Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Alleppey, check in, evening shikara ride

    We drive from Coimbatore to Alleppey through Palakkad and Thrissur. The drive takes around 5 to 6 hours with stops, longer on weekends. You check in to your houseboat or resort, and in the evening take a shikara, a small canopied boat that fits into the narrow canals the big houseboats cannot reach.

  2. Day 2: Alleppey backwaters, Krishnapuram Palace, Marari Beach

    A day on and around the water. Morning on the backwaters, then Krishnapuram Palace, a palace now run as a museum, and the late afternoon at Marari Beach.

  3. Day 3: Alleppey to Kovalam via Jatayu Earth's Center

    You drive south and turn inland at Kollam for Jatayu Earth's Center at Chadayamangalam, a rock-top park with a giant bird sculpture reached by cable car or on foot. Opening days, timings and cable car tickets change by season, so we check them for your travel date and plan the day around them. Then on to Kovalam for two nights.

  4. Day 4: Lighthouse Beach, Hawah Beach, Padmanabhaswamy Temple

    Morning at Kovalam's Lighthouse Beach and Hawah Beach next to it. In the afternoon you drive about 13 km into Thiruvananthapuram for Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple.

  5. Day 5: Poovar Island mangrove cruise, back to Coimbatore

    A morning boat ride through the Poovar mangroves to the beach where the Neyyar river meets the sea, then the long drive home. This is a very long day on the road, and you reach Coimbatore late at night. The drive is around 9 hours with stops, so an extra night on the way can be added on request.

How far / how to reach

Coimbatore to Alleppey is a half-day drive. Alleppey to Kovalam with the Jatayu stop takes most of Day 3. Day 5 is the longest, from the southern tip of Kerala back to Coimbatore.

Places you will see

Alleppey and Marari. Kerala Tourism's guide to Alappuzha lists the houseboat backwaters, Vembanad Lake, Krishnapuram Palace and Marari Beach, named after the fishing village of Mararikulam.

Kovalam. The Lighthouse Beach page on Kerala Tourism describes the red and white Vizhinjam lighthouse at the south end of the beach, with views along the coast.

Poovar. Kerala Tourism's Poovar backwaters article explains that the beach sits where the Neyyar river joins the Arabian Sea and is reached by boat.

Jatayu Earth's Center. The official Jatayu Earth's Center site bills it as the world's largest bird sculpture.

Best time to go

October to March is the best window: dry, calm seas and good beach days. April and May are hot and humid on the coast. June to September brings the monsoon; the backwaters stay open, but Kovalam's sea is rough and swimming may be restricted then.

The price is ₹15,999 to ₹27,999 per person, based on 2 travelling together. Send your dates, the number of adults and children, your pickup point, and whether you want a houseboat or a resort in Alleppey. We send a written quote naming the vehicle and both stays. A couple travels in a sedan, a family of six or seven in an Innova or Innova Crysta, and larger groups in a Tempo Traveller or Force Urbania.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a dress code at Padmanabhaswamy Temple?

Yes, and it is strict. Kerala Tourism's note on the temple dress code says men wear a mundu or dhoti without a shirt, and women wear a sari, mundum neriyathum or skirt and blouse. Dhotis can be rented at the entrance. The temple sets its own entry rules, and we explain them in your quote.

Can we stay on a houseboat both nights in Alleppey?

You can choose a houseboat, a resort, or one night of each. Tell us when you ask for a quote. Houseboats need advance booking in the winter season.

Day 5 looks long. Can we break the journey?

Yes. The drive from Poovar to Coimbatore takes most of the day. Many guests prefer adding a night or skipping the Poovar cruise so they reach home earlier. Ask and we will quote both options.

Can we change the plan?

Yes, as long as the drive times still work. You can swap Jatayu for more beach time, or add Varkala. Tell us what matters to you and we will say what fits.

How do payment and cancellation work?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.

Who is this package not for?

If you want hill stations, pick the Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey 5-day trip. If you want all of Kerala in a week, see the Kerala 7 days tour package. For a longer loop there is our 12-day Kerala tour. For a shorter beach stay, try the 4-day Kovalam and Poovar trip, or the Cochin, Athirapally and Alleppey trip if backwaters near Kochi suit you.
