Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Masinagudi via Ooty and Kalhatty, evening safari

    Leave Coimbatore early. You climb to Ooty through Mettupalayam, pass through Ooty city without stopping for sightseeing, then descend the Kalhatty ghat to Masinagudi. After check-in we try for an evening safari, subject to forest availability. If the slot is full, the evening is yours at the resort.

  2. Day 2: Mudumalai safari, Theppakadu Elephant Camp and return

    Morning safari in Mudumalai if seats are available, then the Theppakadu Elephant Camp. After lunch, drive back to Coimbatore by whichever ghat route is open on your date. Some forest roads allow only local vehicles; if that applies, we explain how that stretch works in your quote.

How far / how to reach

Coimbatore is the nearest airport to Ooty and Masinagudi, and the district's how-to-reach page puts Ooty 89 km from Coimbatore by road. Add about 36 km down the Kalhatty ghat to Masinagudi. Plan on 4 to 5 hours with a breakfast stop. Ooty ghat road timings and the rules for the Kalhatty road can change, so we confirm them before your trip.

Places you will see

Mudumalai Tiger Reserve covers 321 sq km where Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala meet. The Nilgiris District Administration's Mudumalai page lists the Masinagudi forest animals most visitors hope to see: elephants, gaur, tiger, panther, spotted deer, barking deer and wild boar, plus hornbills and minivets. Sightings are never guaranteed.

The same page describes the Theppakadu Elephant Camp as a popular stop and puts the reserve 36 km from Ooty via Kalhatty. The forest stretch below Kalhatty is where many people see their first deer from the car.

Safaris, elephant camp visits and forest stays are booked on the official Mudumalai Tiger Reserve website or at the reception in Theppakadu. Slots, vehicle types and fees change, so check them for your travel date.

Best time to go

Mudumalai is open most of the year, but the forest department can close safaris during fire season or heavy rain. Entry depends on the forest department on the day; if it is closed, we swap in another stop nearby. In the rainy season in Ooty, roughly June to September, the Kalhatty ghat is slower and mist is common. Bring a light jacket. From ₹6,500 per person. Your quote depends on dates, the resort and group size. Couples travel in a sedan, families in an Innova or Innova Crysta, larger groups in a Tempo Traveller. Our own vehicle cannot enter the core forest, so safaris run in forest department vehicles.

Frequently asked questions

What if the safari is sold out?

Safari seats are run by the forest department and sell out on weekends. We book them when available. If both slots are full, you still get the forest drive through Masinagudi and the elephant camp, and we swap in another stop nearby.

Does this trip include sightseeing in Ooty?

No. You pass through Ooty city but do not sightsee there. If you want the places to visit in Ooty in 2 days, look at our Ooty and Coonoor trip or the Ooty day trip.

Can we just hire a car with driver to Ooty for two days?

Yes. If you only want a Coimbatore to Ooty cab for 2 days without a package, see our Coimbatore car rental page and send your dates.

Can we add Mysore or Bandipur?

Yes, with an extra day. Mudumalai borders Karnataka, so the Mysore and Ooty 4-day trip is a good base to extend from.

Who should pick a different package?

Anyone who gets carsick on hairpin bends, or wants guaranteed tiger sightings. For a one-day Nilgiris trip, see the Coonoor day tour; for hill stations with more time, try Kotagiri and Coonoor in 3 days, or the 15-day South India circuit. What are the payment and cancellation terms?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.
