Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Fort, Kalpathy and Malampuzha

7:00 AM. Pickup and the drive west across the Tamil Nadu and Kerala border.

Morning, Palakkad Fort. The Palakkad district page on the fort says Hyder Ali of Mysore built it in 1766 and the British took it over in 1790. It is now under the Archaeological Survey of India, open 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with a Hanuman temple by the entrance.

Late morning, Kalpathy. A street of old matching houses on the Kalpathy river, with a Shiva temple that, per Kerala Tourism's Kalpathy page, resembles the Kasi Viswanatha temple. Lunch in Palakkad follows.

Afternoon, Malampuzha. The dam and gardens, about 10 km from Palakkad town. Ride the ropeway if it is running.

About 8:00 PM. Back in Coimbatore.

How far / how to reach

Palakkad Fort is 52 km from Coimbatore, per the district page, and Malampuzha is about 10 km beyond Palakkad town.

Places you will see

The district gardens page describes the Malampuzha garden's lawns, fountains and rose garden, and a 20-minute aerial ropeway over the garden and dam. A rock garden made from waste material sits half a kilometre away on the Coimbatore road. Kerala Tourism says the Kalpathy chariot festival is held in November.

Best time to go

All year for the fort and garden. Expect crowds at Kalpathy during the November festival. In the monsoon we check garden and ropeway status the day before.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Malampuzha dam timings?

The district lists the garden as open 10:00 AM to 7:30 PM, and the ropeway 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 2:30 PM to 8:00 PM. Hours can change, so we check the day before.

Will we see the Malampuzha lights?

Probably not. The district says the gardens are lit from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM on weekends and national holidays. Staying for it means a later return; ask and we will quote for it.

What if the ropeway is closed?

You pay for the ropeway at the counter, so a closure costs you nothing. We add time at the garden or the rock garden instead.

Can we add Silent Valley or Nelliyampathy?

Not on this day. Those need a slower plan; try our 3-day Nelliyampathy trip. The Kerala temples tour is our longer central Kerala option, and our Coimbatore temples and Isha day is another one-day choice. For more of Palakkad's old streets and temples, see our Palakkad heritage day tour.

How do payment and cancellation work?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.
