Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Coimbatore to Ooty

    Pickup, then an Isha Yoga Center stop on request, and we plan the day around it. After that we go up the Mettupalayam ghat road. Evening at Ooty Lake. Night in Ooty.

  2. Day 2: The Nilgiris

    Doddabetta Peak, the Botanical Garden and the Coonoor viewpoints. Second night in Ooty.

  3. Day 3: Ooty to Wayanad

    Drive down through Gudalur into Wayanad. Afternoon at a lake or viewpoint. Night in Wayanad.

  4. Day 4: Wayanad caves and wildlife

    Morning at Edakkal Caves, afternoon on a wildlife drive if the forest department has slots; entry depends on the forest department on the day, and if it is closed we swap in another stop nearby. Second night in Wayanad.

  5. Day 5: Wayanad to Munnar

    The longest day of the trip, close to a full day on the road. Night in Munnar.

  6. Day 6: Munnar tea valleys

    Eravikulam National Park, the tea estates and Mattupetty Dam. Second night in Munnar.

  7. Day 7: Munnar to Kodaikanal

    Cross back into Tamil Nadu and climb to Kodaikanal. Evening walk by the lake. Night in Kodaikanal.

  8. Day 8: Kodaikanal lakes and viewpoints

    Kodaikanal Lake, Coaker's Walk, Pillar Rocks and Bryant Park. Second night in Kodaikanal.

  9. Day 9: Kodaikanal to Coimbatore

    Drive down via Palani and drop at your pickup point.

How far / how to reach

Ooty is about 90 km from Coimbatore. The Wayanad to Ooty distance is about 100 to 120 km through Gudalur, depending on where in Wayanad you stay. Wayanad to Munnar is the long leg of the loop. Munnar to Kodaikanal is about 150 to 170 km, and Kodaikanal is about 170 km from Coimbatore. Most legs take around 3 to 5 hours with stops. Wayanad to Munnar is about 320 km and around 7 to 8 hours with stops, and Munnar to Kodaikanal runs around 4.5 to 5.5 hours.

Places you will see

Doddabetta is the highest peak in Tamil Nadu at 2,623 m, according to the Nilgiris district's Ooty page. Edakkal Caves in Wayanad are a prehistoric rock shelter formed where one boulder wedged between two bigger ones. The visit means an uphill walk, so tell us about knee or heart problems. In Munnar, the Eravikulam park closes every February and March for the tahr calving season (Kerala Tourism: Eravikulam). Kodaikanal stands at 7,200 ft and is known as the princess of hill stations, according to the Dindigul district page on Kodaikanal.

Best time to go

September to May. April and May are the busiest months in all four places, so book early. Wayanad and Munnar get heavy monsoon rain from June to August. December and January are cold at night in Ooty and Kodaikanal. Eravikulam is closed in February and March.

Ooty vs Kodaikanal: which should you pick?

Which is better depends on what you want: Ooty has more to see and the toy train, while Kodaikanal is smaller and quieter, built around one lake. In the Ooty vs Kodaikanal height comparison, Ooty town is a little higher, at roughly 2,200 m, and Kodaikanal is at 7,200 ft (about 2,195 m). So the two are close, with Ooty slightly higher.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an Ooty to Kodaikanal train?

No. Kodaikanal has no railway; its nearest station is Kodai Road in Dindigul district. There is also no Ooty to Kodaikanal toy train: the Nilgiri toy train runs only between Mettupalayam and Ooty. On this trip you drive between them, through Kerala.

What is the Munnar to Ooty distance?

Roughly 250 km by road via Coimbatore, about 7 hours with stops. This loop never drives that leg directly. It goes Ooty to Wayanad to Munnar, so you see Wayanad on the way.

Does the trip include a Western Ghats trek?

No. It is a sightseeing trip with short walks at Edakkal, Eravikulam and Coaker's Walk. Trekking in Western Ghats forests needs forest department permits and a guide; ask and we check what is open.

Can we take the toy train in Ooty?

Yes, on Day 2 if you book tickets early; we meet you at the station. Tickets are extra.

Who should pick a different package?

If 9 days is too long, take Ooty and Coonoor in 3 days or the Kodaikanal 4 day package. For Munnar with Thekkady instead of four hill stations, see the Munnar and Thekkady trip. For just two hill stations, take our 4-day Ooty and Kodaikanal trip, or try Munnar and Wayanad in four days. The 7-day route through Madurai and Kanyakumari adds the south coast.

What about payment and cancellation?

A 30% advance confirms your trip, and the balance date is in your written quote. Cancel 15 days or more before the trip and we refund the full advance. From 14 to 3 days before, we refund half the advance. Within 2 days of the trip, the advance is not refunded.
